2003 Track & Field: Torrey owned the top time on the team in the 200-meter dash and the top five times in the 400-meter dash during the indoor season. Her top mark in the 400 was a third place finish at the Air Force Invitational (58.22), but she also completed a 17th place finish at the Big 12 Championships (58.35). Her indoor distance medley relay team also placed ninth at the Big 12s with a time of 11:56.31. During the outdoor campaign, Torrey competed in the 100-meter and 400-meter intermediate hurdles and secured the top five marks on the team in the 100 and the top seven in the 400-m intermediate. In the 100-meter hurdles, she recorded her season-best time of 13.99 in a first place finish at the CU Twilight meet, but took sixth at the Big 12 Championships (14.10) and 18th at the NCAA Regional Preliminaries (14.13). She also claimed first in the 400-m intermediate hurdles at the CU Twilight with her best time of the season (61.30) before taking 18th in the NCAA Regional Prelims (64.47).
2002 Track & Field: In indoor competition, Torrey was seventh in the 60 meter hurdles in the semi-finals of the Big 12 Championships and fourth in the preliminaries of the 400 meter dash. Torrey also competed in the 200 meter dash, the 55 meter dash, the 55 meter hurdles, and the 60 meter dash during indoor competition. She was part of the indoor 4 X 400 team that took third at the Husker Invitational and the 4 X 440 that placed third at the Air Force Invitational. Outdoors, Torrey had a successful season in the 400 meter intermediate hurdles, finishing first at the Jack Christensen Invite (61.08), second in two other competitions and tallied four other top five finishes. Her personal record in the event (59.50) came in a fifth place finish at the finals of the Big 12 Championship. Torrey won first in the 100 meters at the Air Force Quadrangular with an 11.97 time.
2001 Track & Field: On a 2001 team full of great sprinters and hurdlers, Torrey?s name was not left out as one of the top runners. As a freshman she took eighth place during the Big 12 Indoor Championships? prelims (8.76) and semifinals (8.73) in the 60 meter hurdles, and took third place in the same event at the Nebraska Quadrangular (8.97). She performed even better when the outdoor season got underway, placing in the top six in every event she participated in. Torrey made her presence known at the UCSD Open in late March placing fourth in the 100 meter hurdles (14.87), and then taking third overall in the 400 meter intermediate hurdles the same day. She took second at the Cowtown Classic in the 200 meter intermediate hurdles (1:05:29) and a week later won the 100 meter hurdles competition (15:28) at the Long Beach State Invitational.
High School: Torrey was named first-team all-region in the 110 and 300-meter hurdles as a senior, and took fourth in the 300-m hurdles and fifth in the 110-m hurdles as well. She is No. 6 all-time in her region in the 300-m hurdles, and was named the Army Reserve National Scholar Athlete Award winner at Taft High School. As a junior, Torrey was first-team all-state in the 110 and 300-m hurdles, taking fifth and sixth respectively. Her sophomore year, she was first-team in the 300-m hurdles. Her team won the city championship from 1998-2000, and she holds the school record in the 110-m hurdles with her time of 13.99, which she ran at the Mt. SAC Relays.
Personal: Deneeka Durunda Michelle Torrey was born June 16, 1982 to parents Jeffrey and Vickie Torrey in Jackson, Miss. She is a fine arts major at Colorado, with an interest in architectural design. Her hobbies include shopping, skating and reading. Torrey chose Colorado over UNLV, UCLA, USC and Fresno State.
