MIAMI, Fla. -- The University of Colorado women’s golf team is in first place after two rounds of competition Monday at the Fourth Annual Miccosukee Women’s Championship.

Colorado shot a 306-310--616, edging Georgia State by two strokes for the lead through 36 holes, with Florida International in third, five strokes back. This is the first time Colorado has had a lead in a tournament this season after two rounds of play.

CU sophomore Hannah Hoch shot a 1-over-par 74-73--147 Monday on the par-73 course and is by herself in first place.  Hoch is four strokes ahead of a four-way tie for second.  If Hoch can hold on, it will be her second victory this year.

“We played well," head golf coach Anne Kelly said following the round.  "I was really proud of the team after our first round.  It’s a really good first round of the spring season, coming out of the cold country and down to a new place.  The kids are working hard in practice, and it’s paying off.

“Hannah was our main steady as she has been all year.  She played very solid again.”

Along with Hoch, Maria Persson-Gulda helped out big in Colorado’s effort to win its first tournament this season.  The junior struggled in the first round with a score of 80, but came charging back in the second round with a 2-over par 75 to tie for 11th with a 155 total.

“Maria came back with a good 75 in the second round to help us tremendously,” exclaimed Kelly, who saw her team take the lead after a grueling 14 hours in breezy conditions to complete the first two rounds.

Elsewhere for CU, Allison Rella had a good first round showing, but dropped in the second round and shot for a tie for 24th (75-82--157).  If Rella can hold on to the top 25, it will be her fourth consecutive finish in that group.  Junior Jessie Malcolm shot a pair of 80s and sits tied for 37th with a 160 total.  Rounding out the Buffs is freshman Lindsay Senger, who had a 77-88--165 scorecard and is tied for 57th.

“We played some solid golf in the first round (and) hung around in the second round,” said Kelly, who is trying to lead CU to its second tournament victory in the 11th season of the program's existence.  “We’re looking forward to tomorrow to see what happens.”

The final round will be played Tuesday morning.
