Dina Piterniece is healthy and ready to go after injuries slowed her junior season. She has a beautiful outside shot to go along with excellent range. She will play mainly at the 2-or-3 spot on the floor and her experience in junior college and at the international level gives the Buffaloes added depth at those positions.

 

2007-08 (Junior): She missed the first eight games of her initial season in Boulder due to a broken toe on her left foot suffered during preseason practice. Piterniece made her long-awaited CU debut against Texas Southern (12/14) grabbing three rebounds and dishing out an assist. Her first points came on a 3-pointer two games later in the win over Southern Utah. Piterniece played in three of the final six games of the season and hit a key 3-pointer late in the first half of CU’s second round WNIT win over Gonzaga.

 

2005-07 (Odessa College): Piterniece played two seasons at Odessa (Texas) College where her teams compiled an impressive 66-3 record, claiming the 2007 NJCAA Division I national championship and a runner-up national finish in 2006. She averaged 12.8 points and six rebounds per game as a sophomore as the Wranglers finished 32-2, sharing the Western Junior College Athletic Conference crown (13-1) before winning the Region V and national titles. Piterniece led the WJCAC in 3-point field goals made with 3.36 per game and also ranked fifth in 3-point accuracy at 41.3 percent and was eighth in scoring. As a freshman in 2005-06, Piterniece earned All-WJCAC honors while helping Odessa to a 34-1 record. Piterniece, who had 200 3-pointers in her two-year career at Odessa, was ranked the 12th best overall junior college sophomore by All Star Girls Report.

 

Latvia National Team: A veteran of several European Women’s Championships, Piterniece played for Latvia’s U20 team in 2005 and 2006, the U18 squad in 2004 and the U16 team in 2001. Her U20 team won a bronze medal at the 2005 European Championships.

High School: A 2005 graduate of Riga Secondary School No. 49, Piterniece’s prep team won the high school national championship in 2005 after falling in the title game the previous two seasons. She scored 35 points in the 2005 championship game, one of her top games that season. She played for the Ridzene youth club team from 1999-2003.

 

Academics: Piterniece is a psychology major at Colorado.

 

Personal: Dina Piterniece was born May 25, 1986 in Riga. She is the daughter of Konrads Piternieks and Daiga Piterniece and has two brothers ? Krists and Mareks Piternieks. Krists is a professional basketball player in Latvia and helped his team to the 2007 national championship. Her goal is to play professionally in Europe and also work in sports management. She speaks three languages (Latvian, Russian and English) and enjoys sleeping, water sports, going to the beach and collecting everything about Michael Jordan.
