HIGH SCHOOL: Bethea won the Alaska State 4A Cross Country Championship in 2010 after winning the Alaska Regional III Championship the week before. She went on to compete at the Nike Cross Northwest Regionals, placing 41st overall. Bethea placed 18th at the state cross country championship in 2009 as a junior, improving from a 20th-place finish as a sophomore. She was also successful on the track at KHS, owning the 800 (2:21.18) and 5,000-meter (17:24.08) school records. Bethea won the Alaska State 4A Championship in the 1,600 as a senior after a runner-up finish in 2010. She also placed second as a senior at the state meet in the 3,200 and was sixth in the 800. In the summer of 2011 she raced to an eighth-place finish in the 5k at the USATF Junior Outdoor Championships. She also competed in the 100, 400, 300-hurdles, shot put, high jump and pentathlon as a member of the KHS track and field team. Bethea was also recruited by Portland, Boise State, Chico State, Idaho and Alaska-Anchorage.
HIGH SCHOOL BESTS: 800-meters: 2:21.18; 1,600-meters: 5:04.27; 3,200-meters: 10:56.52.
IN THE CLASSROOM: Bethea intends to major in ecology and evolutionary biology.
PERSONAL: Jaymi Patice Bethea was born on March 18, 1993 in Fort Meyers, Fla. She is the daughter of William and Michelle Bethea of Kodiak, Alaska and has one younger sister, Dana.
