HIGH SCHOOL: Van Vleet earned letters as a member of the cross country and track teams at Faith Christian Academy. She owns the FCA 800-meter record of 2:22.60, which she set on May, 19, 2006. She was an all-league and all-conference selection as a junior. Van Vleet spent one academic year abroad in Germany as an exchange student.
ACADEMICS: Van Vleet is majoring in German and Spanish at Colorado. She would like to work as an interpreter for a humanitarian-aid organization following graduation. Van Vleet was a member of the National Honor Society in high school and was the valedictorian.
PERSONAL: Lydia Van Vleet was born on May 17, 1988 in Denver. Her parents are Larry and Lucinda Van Vleet of Thornton, Colo. She has one younger sister, Mary. Van Vleet lists her hobbies as hiking, camping, reading, writing letters to her friends in Germany and traveling as her hobbies. She has taken five humanitarian trips, which include trips to Mexico, Russia and an Indian reservation and she works at her church in Denver. Van Vleet has tutored children from India in math and reading.
