2008 OUTLOOK: Pete is the 2006 Big 12 Steeplechase Champion. He hopes to contend for that title again and to advance to the NCAA finals and possibly the Olympic Trials.

2007: Janson focused on the indoor season as he used a redshirt for the outdoor season. He ran in three meets. His first was the Air Force Invite where he competed in the mile (4:18.24) and took second. The following week he recorded a pr in the 3k at the Husky Classic, clocking a time of 8:04.66. At the conference meet, he placed 13th in 8:20.61.

2006: Janson had a quiet indoor season, before having a breakout outdoor season. He participated in the mile and 3,000m runs during the indoor season. He set personal records in both events. At the Husky Classic, he placed 31st, but earned a pr of 4:08.18 in the mile run. At the University of Washington Open the following day, he placed fifth in the 3,000 with a pr of 8:20.18. At the indoor conference championship, he placed 22nd in the 3,000 (8:24.17) and he was a part of the DMR which took sixth. Janson concentrated on the steeplechase in the outdoor season, but did compete once in the 1,500, placing first at the Cardinal Invitational (3:47.70). Janson set a personal record on his way to capture his first Big 12 title in the steeplechase. He recorded a mark of 8:44.76, which was also a regional qualifying time. At regionals, he placed fifth (8:56.92) and took 15th at NCAAs (8:49.58).

2005: Janson started the indoor season with a bang, taking first place at the Colorado Open 3,000-meter race in January with a 8:36.39 time. He set a personal record in the 3k with a time of 8:12.87 at the Big 12 Indoors, finishing in seventh-place. He ran the mile race one time at the Air Force Classic, recording a 4:19.55 finish for fifth-place. At the Big 12 Indoors, he ran with the distance medley relay team who finished in 9:54.95. During the outdoor season, Janson continued his stellar year while competing in the 1,500, the Steeplechase and the 5,000. He set a pr and regional qualifying mark at the Cardinal Invitational 1,500 race with a time of 3:46.00 for a fourth-place finish. At the Mt. SAC Relays, he set another pr and regional qualifying mark with a time of 8:52.06 for a 10th-place finish in the steeplechase and rounded out the year with a 16:02.03 finish in the 5k race at the Big 12 Championships.

2004: In his first taste of collegiate track action, Janson lettered while competing during the indoor season in the mile run, 3,000-meter and 5,000-meter runs and distance medley relay. In the mile, Janson ran one race and posted a 4:10.54 at the Adidas Classic to finish fourth. His top time in the 3k came at the Big 12 Championships when he took 25th place in a time of 8:31.57. He also ran an 8:59.25 (third place) at the Colorado Invitational. He competed in the 5k at the Air Force Invite, where he clocked a 15:50.72 for an overall seventh place. He was the final leg in the Distance Medley Relay and helped CU earn Big 12 scoring points at the conference championships with a fifth-place finish (9:57.55), one of the best Big 12 times throughout the year. During the outdoor season he was CU’s top steeplechaser, as he earned letterman status and Big 12 scoring points by finishing seventh (9:13.75) at the conference championships. His top time, however, in the steeplechase occurred at the Mt. SAC Relays when he posted a personal best 9:04.20, good for the win in his heat. That time later became the NCAA’s 67th best mark in that event for the 2004 season. He also ran one 5k in a time of 15:47.95 at the Big 12 Championships.

CROSS COUNTRY: After redshirting his true freshman season (2003) he won the 2004 U.S. Junior National Championship title and finished 55th in that year’s IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Brussels.  As a redshirt freshman he ran in two races, finishing 19th at the Rocky Mountain Shootout and ninth in the Pre-National open race. In 2005 Janson ran in all of the Buffs’ races, including the NCAA (204th overall, seventh team) and Big 12 (23rd overall, seventh team) Championships. His best overall finish came at the Rocky Mountain Shootout, where he took 11th overall and seventh on the team. Janson ran in five races for the Buffs in 2006, including the final three postseason meets. Janson did not score for CU in ’06 and his best finish was once again at the RMS, taking 13th overall. Janson scored for the Buffs in three meets his final season. He was ninth overall at the Rocky Mountain Shootout (sixth scorer) for his best finish of the season. At the pre-nationals race, Janson crossed the finish 40th overall (fourth scorer). He was again the fourth scorer at the conference meet, placing 11th overall and earning his first All-Big 12 honor. Janson just missed out on a all-region nod as he placed 27th overall (seventh scorer). He came in 143rd at nationals and was the Buffs’ fifth scorer.

HIGH SCHOOL: A three-year letterwinner in track and cross country at Highland Park High School, Janson was the state runner-up in the mile as a sophomore, third as a junior and took home the title as a senior by beating the eight-time state champ to effectively end his reign. He was also an all-state selection in track and cross country, and an All-Area MVP as a senior, with a third-place finish in the state championships. Janson graduated with the Highland Park 800-meter record (1:54.16) and recorded the 1,600-meter record (4:25.15).

ACADEMICS: Janson is a biology-EPOB major at Colorado.  He was named to the Commissioner’s Honor Roll following the fall ’03, spring ’04 and both semesters in ’05 and ?06 and was a Dean’s List student during the spring of ?04. He currently has a better than 3.0 grade point average.

PERSONAL: John Peter Janson was born January 25, 1985 in Bedford, Mass.  He is the son of Eric and Liz Barrow-Janson, who now live in London, England. He is the older brother of Nils and Reily.
