After an eight-year hiatus from the sport, Sylvan Kaufman returned to his alma mater in 2003 and enters his second season at CU where he is the assistant alpine coach to his former collegiate head coach, Richard Rokos.
Kaufman was a member of Colorado’s alpine team during the 1993 and ?94 seasons. In ’93 he raced in five meets, with a season-best 10th place finish in the giant slalom in CU’s home meet at Eldora and a top slalom finish of 21st in the season opener at Utah. In ’94 he turned in three top-10 finishes, including a career best weekend with a seventh-place showing in the GS and fourth-place finish in the slalom, again, at Eldora. He would go on to graduate from the CU-Boulder campus in ’97 with a B.A. in Spanish Literature.
Prior to his collegiate career he skied for the Summit County Race Team, Team Breckenridge and the Taos Race Teams. In ’92 he had a pair of key third-place finishes in a slalom competition at Breckenridge and a giant slalom race at Vail. As a junior he placed fifth in the downhill at the Lake Placid Junior Olympics in 1991, and in the ’90 JO’s he brought home a fourth-place finish in the GS at Mt. Bachelor, Ore..
Born Sept. 30, 1972 in Taos, N.M., Kaufman graduated from Frisco’s Summit County High School, where he was an all-league soccer player, in 1991. He enjoys fly fishing, golfing and mountain biking in his free time.
