This Season: Montalbo's season goal is easy: to return home and compete in what would be his first NCAA Championships in his own backyard. The fact that the West Regional championships will also be decided in Anchorage gives him even more focus and incentive to travel and boosts his desire to ski well. An exceptional skier, he will look to capitalize on a recent switch of equipment.
2000-01: Slightly off his sophomore-season pace, Montalbo had a pair of top-10 finishes in the slalom and three top-20 finishes in the GS. At the season-opening Utah Invitational, he finished a career-best third in the slalom. He slipped a week later in McCall, Idaho at the Nevada Invitational when he finished 16th and 15th in the GS and S, respectively. He didn?t finish for the second time of the season at CU?s own invite at Eldora in the GS, but made up for it when he finished sixth in the slalom in the same meet. In his attempt to qualify for his first NCAA Championship, he finished 14th in the GS at the NCAA West Regionals, but was disqualified in the first run of the slalom, failing to make the cut for the biggest race of the year.
1999-00: Montalbo had an excellent season, finishing in the top 10 in all but two events. His best-combined effort came at the Montana State Invitational, where he finished sixth in the giant slalom and fifth in the slalom. One week later, he compiled a pair of seventh-place showings at the Denver Invitational in Winter Park, Colo. At the West Regional in Jackson Hole, Wyo., Montalbo skied strong in the GS, finishing eighth. He struggled in the slalom, missing a gate in the early morning run and ending in 23rd. He did not compete in the NCAA Championships.
1998-99: He competed in every race besides the national championships. His best effort of the year came at the Western State Invitational where he finished fourth and sixth in the two slalom races held that weekend. He had one top-ten finish in the giant slalom, as he finished ninth in the first race of his career, the Montana State Invitational. He finished 17th in the GS at the West Regional in Reno, Nevada. He fell on the slalom course at the regionals, and eventually wound up 30th. Other:He spent six years with the Alyeska Ski Club in Alaska. He then joined the Colorado Elite Team in 1994. He most recently raced for the Aspen Ski Club from 1994 to 1996 and then the Vail Ski Club from 1996 to 1998. He was 22nd in the slalom event at the 2000 U.S. Alpine Championships in Jackson Hole. He was 41st in the giant slalom. He placed 15th in the downhill at the 1996 U.S. National Championships in Sugarland, Maine. He was 18th in the super G on that same mountain. He also played baseball in high school and was part of the 1994 state champion team. Academics: Montalbo is a WHAT major enrolled in Colorado's Leeds School of Business.
Personal: Born June 13, 1977 in Redwood City, Calif., he is the son of Mel and Sylvie Montalbo of Anchorage. His father was a football player for the Oakland Raiders. He wants to be a sled dog mosher after school and has already begun competing in sled dog races in Alaska. His younger brother Brian is a sophomore at Cal where he playes baseball and was drafted by the Atlanta Braves.
