2011: Indoor: McCathran's main event was the 600-yard run during the indoor season. He ran a season-best time of 1:12.11 at the Husker Invite (2/5) and placed sixth. McCathran recorded a time of 1:12.12 in the preliminary round at the Big 12 Championships, but didn't advance to the finals as he placed 16th overall. He also competed in the 4x400 and mile relays. In the 4x400 relay he finished with a season-best time of 3:14.38 at the Husker Invite (2/5).
Outdoor: McCathran ran in two races during his final season. He had a season-best finish of 49.31 at the CSU-Pueblo Open (4/16); finishing sixth overall. McCathran also placed eighth at the CU Invite (4/9) with a time of 49.49.
2010: Indoor: McCathran ran the top two times in the 600-yard run for the Buffs in 2010. He PR'd at the Big 12 Championship with a time of 1:11.47, the sixth fastest ever at CU. The time also made him the fourth fastest performer in the event. McCathran also owns the 14th best time in the 600 (1:11.97), which he ran at the Iowa State Classic (2/13). McCathran was also part of the 10th-place 4x400-meter relay at the conference meet. The relay raced to a time of 3:15.23, the 10th best in school history.
Outdoor: McCathran ran his season-best time in the 400-hurdles at the CU Invite (4/10). He finished in 54.50, which was good for seventh. It was the seventh best time posted by a Buff for the season.
2009: Indoor: McCathran ran in the 200 and 400-meter dashes, along with the 600-yard run during the indoor season, but once again his main focus was on the 400. He raced to a personal record of 49.43 at the New Mexico Invite and took fifth. His season debut in the 400 was 49.93, which earned him fourth place at the Air Force All-Comers meet (1/16). McCathran ran in the 600 at the conference indoor meet and was 16th (1/12/72).
Outdoor: During the outdoor season, he stuck with the 400, but also added the 400-hurdles. He ran a PR of 49.09 in the 400 at the Big 12 Championship, placing 26th overall. In the 400 hurdles, McCathran ran 55.20 for sixth at the Front Range Classic (5/2).
2008: Indoor: McCathran mainly concentrated on the 400. He ran 50.43 in the prelims of the Air Force Invitational and a 21st place finish. He took 19th in the event at the Don Barrett Open one week later.
Outdoor: During the outdoor season, he once again focused on the 400. McCathran ran 49.63 at the CSU Ram Open on April 19 and earned a sixth place finish.
HIGH SCHOOL: McCathran earned three letters on the football team at MHS. His football team was the state runner-up in 2004 and '05 for Division 17 4A Texas High Schools. He also played baseball for two years and earned one letter as a member of the track team where he ran the 800, 4x400 and did the high jump.
PERSONAL: Matthew Joseph McCathran was born on April 20, 1989 in Marshall, Texas. He is the son of Eric and Jill McCathran. He has one brother, Zachary. McCathran was an extra in the movie The Great Debaters with Denzel Washington. He enjoys painting, writing and fashioning things out of wood in his free time.
