Susie Powers will give Colorado senior leadership in the back court. She was a consistent force for the Buffaloes, especially on the defensive end, and will likely once again see time at both the point and shooting guard.
2006-07 (Junior): Powers started 28 of 30 games during the 2006-07 season, rotating back-and-forth between the point and shooting guard positions. She averaged 3.8 points and 2.6 rebounds per game and was second on the team in assists with 60, but it was her defensive prowess that stood out for the Buffaloes. Named the team’s Defensive Player Award winner by the coaching staff, Powers was one of the reasons the Buffaloes trailed only Oklahoma in field-goal percentage defense during league only games. She routinely disrupted the opposing offense in the backcourt, accounting for 34 steals and a back-court best eight blocked shots. The majority of her scoring came from downtown as 24 of her 40 field-goals made were of the 3-point variety. She was CU’s most accurate 3-point shooter of those that took more than 20 attempts, connecting on 36.9 percent (24-of-65). Powers scored a career-high 12 points, hitting 4-of-5 from downtown, in the Buffaloes’ 81-67 win over Iowa State (1/10). She scored her first points in a CU uniform and had a career-best and established a team season high with six assists against No. 16/15 Vanderbilt (11/12).
2005-06 (Junior-Redshirt): Powers transferred to Colorado from Notre Dame for the 2005-06 academic year and sat out the season due to NCAA transfer rules, using her redshirt season. She fully participated in practice and conditioning in 2005-06 and was a key part of CU’s scouting team during the season.
2003-05 Notre Dame: Powers was a two-year letterwinner at Notre Dame. She played in 41 games over two seasons with the Fighting Irish averaging 6.5 minutes per game. Notre Dame was 48-17 with Powers on the roster advancing to a pair of NCAA Tournaments, including a Sweet 16 appearance in 2004. Ironically, her first two collegiate games came in Boulder at the Coors Events/Conference Center as Notre Dame participated in the 2003 Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Classic. She dished out her first career assist during No. 15 Notre Dame’s 67-63 overtime loss to the No. 20 Buffaloes in the championship game on Nov. 15, 2003.
High School: Powers was a part of three Colorado Class 5A state championship teams at Highlands Ranch High School (2000-02) and was the starting point guard when the Falcons were ranked No. 1 in the nation in 2002. She averaged 13.6 points and 6.8 assists per game over her prep career including a personal-best 15.7 per game as a senior. Powers was a two-time Street & Smith’s honorable mention All-American and a Parade honorable mention All-American in 2003. Powers was a two-year participant at the Nike All-America Camp (2001-02) and played in the 2001-02 Denver Nuggets All-Star Game and the 2002-03 Gold Crown/Nuggets All-Star Game. She was twice given honorable mention to the Class 5A all-state team and was a first team All-Continental League selection in 2002.
Academics: Powers is majoring in Spanish and education at Colorado. She was named to the 2007 Academic All-Big 12 Conference Women’s Basketball first team and a member of the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll for the 2006 fall semester. While at Notre Dame, she was a two-time member of the Big East Academic All-Star Team.
Personal: Susan Marie Powers was born Dec. 17, 1984, in Denver. She is the daughter of John and Susan Powers and has two older sisters, Sherry Wicks and Bobbi Powers, two older brothers Joseph and John and one younger brother, Philip. Sister Sherry is a CU graduate and brother Philip plays football at the University of Nebraska-Kearney. She hopes to one day teach Spanish in high school and coach girls basketball. She spent a portion of the summer of 2006 volunteering at a pastoral center in San Bartolo, Peru, teaching English and basketball to children.
