One of Colorado’s top long-range shooters, Whitney Law can play either backcourt spot but excels as the 2-guard. Her career .379 3-point field-goal percentage ranks ninth on CU’s all-time list and she should breeze into the Buffs’ top 20 for 3-point field-goals made early in the preseason. Law is one of two Colorado seniors, but is eligible to apply for a medical redshirt in the spring after missing all but four games due to injury in 2002-03.
2004-05 (Junior): Played a full season for the first time since her true freshman year at Georgia in 2001-02. She totaled 54 assists and 34 steals as a junior, ranking third on the team. Law had eight double-digit scoring efforts, including back-to-back 14-point performances at Texas A&M (2/5) and against Missouri (2/9) which not only led the Buffs in those contests, but were career-high outputs. She also had a pair of double-doubles, nabbing a personal-best 12 rebounds along with her 14 points against Missouri and sporting an 11-point, 10-rebound performance at Washington in front of a Fox Sports national television audience. For the year, Law hit 21-of-82 (.382) shots from beyond the 3-point arc, registering the 19th best single-season 3-point field-goal percentage in team history. She went 3-for-3 from downtown in CU’s win over Colorado State (12/8). Law started 25 of 27 games at shooting guard, making her debut in the starting lineup at Nevada (11/20).
2003-04 (Sophomore): After sitting out the 2002-03 season due to transferring from Georgia, Law was poised for a breakout year in her first eligible season at Colorado. She saw action in four games, averaging 1.5 points and 1.5 rebounds per game before her season was robbed by a torn anterior cruciate ligament late in the second half in Colorado’s game at Minnesota. She had surgery on Jan. 2 and spent the duration of the season in rehabilitation. She had a season high 20 minutes of playing time in CU’s overtime win over Notre Dame (11/15). She also pulled down four rebounds in that outing with two assists and two points.
2002-03 (Redshirt): Law redshirted due to the NCAA transfer rule, but she was available to practice with the Buffs and filled an important role on the scout team.
At Georgia (2001-02): One of a trio of freshmen to start the season opener for Georgia, Law played in 29 games for the Bulldogs, starting eight. She averaged 4.9 points and 2.7 boards per game, while averaging 21.1 minutes per contest. Scored a career high 12 points and grabbed seven boards in a win over Georgia Southern (12/4).
High School: Law was a two-time member of the Denver Post’s All-Colorado Team, garnering first-team honors as a junior and a senior after being a second-team All-State choice as a sophomore out of Littleton’s Chatfield Senior High. She helped lead the Chargers to back-to-back Class 5A State Championships and identical 22-2 records as a freshman and sophomore under coach Linda Funderburk, as well as four consecutive Jefferson County League titles. Law garnered first-team All-Jeffco League, USA Today and Street & Smith’s All-America honors as a sophomore, junior and senior. She helped lead the Chargers to an 18-4 record and the quarterfinals of the 2001 Class 5A State Tournament as a senior and was named Chatfield’s Female Athlete of the Year. Playing for coach John Weikel during her senior year, Law averaged 18.3 points, 6.8 rebounds and 4.3 assists per game and connected on 82.8 percent of her free throws despite being slowed by mononucleosis for the majority of the season. Produced double-digit scoring outputs in 21-of-22 games in 2000-01, pouring in a season-high 32 against Littleton and topping 20 points eight times. As a junior, she averaged 19.8 points, 8.8 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 3.7 steals per game despite playing with a sore knee from an injury suffered during the summer of 2000. Tabbed honorable mention All-State for Class 5A in volleyball as a sophomore before giving up the sport to concentrate on basketball. She also lettered in track one year at CSH. Law was tabbed as the nation’s No. 57 recruit by Blue Star and ranked No. 58 by rivals.com during the 2000-01 season, also earning All-America honors as a senior, one of just four female prep players in the state to do so that year.
Academics: Law graduated from Colorado with Bachelor of Arts degree in kinesiology in May of 2005 and is pursuing a second bachelor’s degree in psychology. She won the team’s Crystal Adams Scholar-Athlete Award last winter and was named to the Academic All-Big 12 women’s basketball first team.
Personal: The daughter of Rick and ParioLee Law, Whitney was born March 2, 1983. She has one sibling, her older brother Rusty, who is a graduate of the United States Air Force Academy where he played baseball for two years. Her father Rick played college basketball at VMI. She is pursuing a degree in kinesiology at Colorado. Law is a graduate of Chatfield Senior High in Littleton. She had a 3.9 GPA in high school and was a finalist for the Denver Athletic Club’s Female High School Athlete of the Year as senior.
