Sammie Chergo
- Title:
- Assistant Coach
Catherine "Sammie" Chergo is in her first year as an assistant coach in 1996-97 with the University of Colorado, joining the women's golf team from the Fox Hollow Golf Course in Denver.
Â
Chergo earned three letters as a member of the Colorado state University women's golf team from 1988-91, a considerable feat considering she didn't even take up the sport until her freshman year of college. She's made impressive strides since then, a journey that has been highlighted by her selection to represent Colorado in the 1996 USGA Women's Amateur Public Links Championships this past summer.
Â
"Coach Chergo is an inspiration to all of us and a great role model for the team," head coach Justi Miller says of the newest addition to the Colorado staff. "Her love for the game is shown by the fact that she was recruited in three other sports and chose to play golf instead."
Â
As a prep, Chergo was all-world, earning all-state honors in softball, basketball and soccer with Arvada West High School in 1988. As a senior, she was named the USA Today Colorado female high school athlete-of-the-year, was tabbed Denver Post female scholar athlete-of-the-year and was also honored as the Colorado Sportswoman Foundation All-Around Athlete-of-the-Year. She has also been inducted into the Arvada West High School Hall of Fame.
Â
Chergo earned her coaching stripes in 1996, when she led the Fairview High School girls' golf team to the state tournament.
Â
"She works hard, has great ideas and has a great feel for how to motivate and improve young golfers," Miller says. "We are extremely fortunate to have coach Chergo at Colorado."
Â
Born December 17, 1969, in Denver, she graduated from Colorado State in 1993 with a bachelor's degree in nutrition and physiology and is currently working on her master's in nutrition at CSU. After receiving her undergraduate degree, Chergo worked with the Colorado Women's Golf Association as Assistant Executive Director, where she was responsible for publications, tournament organization and other management duties. In her addition to her duties at CU and in graduate school, she works at the nationally-recognized Fox Hollow Golf Course as an assistant.
