Freshman (2002): Handzlik had a tough start to her college career, allowing two goals in her first career start in 10 minutes against Mississippi on Sept. 15. She did not make another appearance after that early-season start.
High School: Handzlik's 2002 Palos Verdes team had a team league low .687 GAA en route to winning the 2002 Bay League and Bay Cup Championships. She had 13 shutouts on the season, and has allowed just one goal during her senior campaign. She was named the league's best defensive player and was named to the South Bay Daily Breeze Women's All-Star Team. Handzlik was Palos Verdes Peninsula's best defensive player all three years she lettered, 2000-02. She was the MVP of Palos Verdes Peninsula's girls tennis team her freshman year when the Panthers won the Bay League Championship. But the biggest moment of her prep career was as a member of the Panthers' softball team (where she was a two year letterwinner) when she dove into home plate and the ensuing catcher to knock the ball from the catcher's hand to win the game. On the club level her Fram Splash U-19 team were the 2001 Surf Cup (San Diego) and Nomads (San Diego) champions. Handzlik was named the MVP of the No mads tournament and during the 2001 season sport the most shutouts(6) and lowest goals against average (.720) in the Premier Coast Soccer League during that '01 season. She also considered attending UCSB before deciding on Colorado because of its mountains, the growing soccer pro gram and the fact that everyone in Boulder seems fun and outdoorsy.
In The Classroom: Handzlik will enter Colorado as an open option major, and is interested in studying mass communications.
Personal: Anna Jean Handzikl was born Aug. 6, 1983 in Torrance, Calif. She is the only daughter of Jan Handzlik of Manhattan Beach and Barbara Handzlik of Palos Verdes Estates, Calif. Her oldest brother Grant graduated from UC-Santa Barbara and is a commercial diver in Anchorage, Alaska, and her other brother, Craig, from Colorado State last spring. She enjoys snowboarding in Mammoth, Calif., Utah and looks forward to snowboarding in Colorado.
