As a Junior in 2006
Vi?al saw action in six games as a junior. She played a season-high three games against Texas Tech (9/16), helping CU to a three game sweep. Vi?al also saw time against Central Connecticut State (9/8), Southern Mississippi (9/9), Texas (9/20) and Baylor (11/22). She recorded seven digs, one assist and one ace. Vi?al was named to the inaugural Big 12 Good Works Team in the fall.
As a Sophomore in 2005
Vi?al played in 95 games as a sophomore, leading all of CU’s defensive specialists in time on the court. She was third on the team in digs with 227 and averaged 2.39 per game. Vi?al led the Buffs on five occasions in digs. With 24 aces, she was second on the squad and led the team eight times. Vi?al recorded four aces for a career-high against Texas A&M (11/19). She picked up a career-best 19 digs in a three-game victory over Oklahoma (10/22). Vi?al also notched 18 digs against Kansas State (11/16) and 17 versus Texas A&M (10/16). She played in 27 of 28 matches, only sitting out against American as CU started its season. For the year, she also tallied 14 assists, tying a career-best of three against Iowa State (10/26).
As a Freshman in 2004
Vi?al appeared in 26 of 28 matches and served as libero in 18 contests. She played the libero spot for the first time in the final three games of the North Carolina match (9/11) recording 12 digs. It was the first of her seven matches with 10 or more digs with the top performance coming against Texas Tech (10/30) where she had 15. Vi?al played the libero position in at least part of all but four Big 12 matches averaging 2.16 digs per game in those contests. She led all CU defensive specialists with 137 digs and was third overall on the team in digs per game (1.96) and ranked fourth in aces per game (0.14). She made her collegiate debut against Denver (9/1), playing in two games with an assist and ace and one dig.
High School
Therese Vi?al was a first-team All-West Catholic Athletic League selection as a senior for Presentation High School in San Jose, Calif., in 2003. She was named to the All-Central Coast Section second team. Vi?al earned All-WCAL second team honors as a junior while helping the Panthers to the Central Coast Section and Northern California State titles. She received honorable mention to the All-Central Coast Section team as a junior. Vi?al had a successful summer of 2004 in AAU Beach Volleyball, teaming with Michaela Donohue to place second in the AAU Beach Volleyball National Championships U19 Girls Division. Vi?al and Donahue won the silver medal in the summer of 2003 at the USA Junior Olympics in Beach Volleyball for U18 girls. Played club volleyball for Club Yahoo! out of San Jose where she was coached by Shelly Wolfe who played for the Buffs in 1995. Club Yahoo! finished 11th at the 2004 Junior Olympics in the 18 Open division. Her club team earned the Bronze Medal at Junior Olympics for 16 Club as a sophomore. Vi?al also lettered in basketball as a forward and track & field as a jumper in high school. She hit the game-winning bucket to send the Panthers to the Northern California State finals as a junior. Named the MVP of Presentation’s freshman basketball team in 2001.
Personal
Born Therese Christine Vi?al on Nov. 26, 1985, in Santa Clara, Calif. She is the daughter of Bob and Trudy Vi?al. She has one younger sister, Michelle, who is a sophomore at Arizona and a younger brother, Matt, who is entering 10th grade at Serra High School, the same school Tom Brady and Barry Bonds attended.
Academics
Vi?al is a broadcast news major at Colorado. She has been on the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll all six semesters at Colorado and owns a 3.469 GPA. Vi?al earned a spot on the Academic All-Big 12 First Team as a sophomore.
