COLORADO BESTS IOWA STATE 2-0
October 11, 1996 | Soccer
AMES, Iowa – In yet another day of firsts in its inaugural season, the University of Colorado women's soccer team earned its first-ever road win and first-ever shutout Friday afternoon, a 2-0 victory over host Iowa State.
Midfielder Brita Zoellner scored on an unassisted goal at 73: 13 to break a 0-0 stalemate midway through the second half, and freshman sensation Shawn Kenyon found a wide open Liz Swain at 89:43 to give the Buffaloes the 2-0 edge and the program's first ever away-from-home win.
Colorado keeper Nina Bjornstad, meanwhile, was more than up to the task of shutting down the Cyclone offense, recording three saves and joining with a suffocating Buffalo defense to pitch the no hitter.
"I'm glad we got our first road win and our first shutout as well," head coach Austin Daniels said. "We need to use this as a stepping stone to continue to improve."
All told, Colorado outshot Iowa State 16 to six, which included an 11 to three Buff edge in shots on goal. Senior Jenny Law led Colorado with four of the 16 Buff shots.
Colorado (4-5-1, 2-4-0 Big 12) will now head to Lincoln, Neb., for Sunday's 12 p.m. MDT showdown with unbeaten and sixth-ranked Nebraska, 9-0-0 and 3-0-0 heading into a Friday night contest against Oklahoma State.
