CU WOMEN'S SOCCER FALLS TO FLORIDA
September 01, 1997 | Soccer
BOULDER, Colo. -Â The University of Colorado women's soccer team was defeated 3-0 by No.17 Florida Monday afternoon at the Pleasant View Soccer Complex in North Boulder.
Â
Colorado drops to 0-2 on the season with the loss.
Â
Colorado hung tough with the highly-touted Gators in the first half, allowing only one goal in the 31st minute of play. Following the break for halftime, however, Florida quickly notched another score in the game's 48th minute, then sealed the victory with a final tally in the 72nd minute.
Â
"Once again, we showed some good things and some things we need to improve upon," Colorado head coach Austin Daniels said. "We need to be more assertive as a team."
Â
Keeper Nina Bjornstad was solid for the Buffs in the net, recording nine saves, several of which came on seemingly sure goals. Offensively, Colorado was paced by senior Donna Holyman, who fired three shots, and sophomore Shawn Kenyon, who tallied two shots.
Â
"We did create some chances and opportunities," Daniels said. "It's just a part of the growing progress. We showed signs of being able to do some things."
Â
Monday's contest was the first of five on the year for Colorado against opponents ranked in the NSCANUmbro preseason Top 20, a schedule which was rated the third toughest in the nation by Soccer Buzz online magazine.
Â
Next up for the Buffs will be a 4 p.m. MDT game Friday against No. 6 Nebraska. Admission to the game, which will also be played at Pleasant View, will be free.
