SECOND HALF RALLY LIFTS CORNHUSKERS PAST COLORADO
September 05, 1997 | Soccer
BOULDER, Colo. - For 60 minutes Friday, the University of Colorado women's soccer team was unstoppable.
Â
Unfortunately for the Buffs, however, a regulation soccer game lasts 90 minutes, not 60, and No. 5 Nebraska was more than willing to fill up the remaining 30 with a fierce second-half rally that earned the Cornhuskers a 5-1 victory.
Â
"We were pleased with the first 60 minutes," Colorado head coach Austin Daniels said. "It was the last 30 that were the problem."
Â
Colorado took a 1-0 lead, its first of the season, in the game's 39th minute, when senior Donna Holyman found the back of the Nebraska net on a hot shot from 15 feet. Colorado held on to that lead for the remainder of the first half and just over 10 minutes into the second stanza.
Â
A resurgent Cornhusker squad, however, took it from there, scoring four goals in 15 minutes of game time to take a commanding lead of its own. A final goal with less than a minute to play made the final 5-1 in Nebraska's favor.
Â
"We need to be able to play well and hard for 90 minutes," Daniels said. "You can say it's a measure of the youth of this team."
Â
Colorado drops to 0-3 on the fledgling season with the loss, while Nebraska moves to 3-0.
Â
Next up for the Buffs will be the final game in a season-opening, four-game home stand, a 1 p.m. MDT contest against Big 12 rival Iowa State on Sunday. Daniels, for one, is looking forward to taking the field again.
Â
"It will be another Big 12 game that we have to do well in," Daniels said. "Iowa State has a good team, and they've got some good players, so we've got to be ready."
Â
The Iowa State contest, like all Colorado home games, will be played at the Pleasant View Soccer Complex in North Boulder. Admission to all CU home games is free.
