FROSH KAIT ANJIAN BOOTS COLORADO TO FIRST VICTORY
September 07, 1997 | Soccer
BOULDER, Colo. -The University of Colorado soccer team earned its first win of the season Sunday afternoon, a 2-1 overtime victory over Big 12 rival Iowa State.
Â
Freshman Kelly Kaitanjian scored the winning goal for the Buffs with just over three minutes left in the second of two overtime periods, lifting a long shot just over the fingertips of Cyclone keeper Hayley Mercer and just under the goal's crossbar. She was fed on the shot by fellow freshman Nicole Perretti, who took control of the ball in Cyclone territory and found the open Kaitanjian.
Â
"Everyone on the team gave 100 percent all the way to the last minute," Kaitanjian said. "This is a team win - everybody deserves credit for the way we played today."
Â
Head coach Austin Daniels, meanwhile, was relieved to earn the victory, especially with a six-game road trip in the Buffs' near future.
Â
"We're very happy to get our first win," Daniels said. "I thought we battled well in the second half and overtime.
Â
"It definitely helps our confidence in a big way," Daniels said. "We needed this."
Â
Freshman Allison Gausman scored Colorado's first goal, a quick shot burned by Mercer in the game's 51 st minute. Iowa State's Barb Lavergne scored the Cylone's lone goal in the 56th minute to knot the score at 1-1, where it remained until Kaitanjian's effort.
Â
Nine hundred fans attended the contest, which was played at the Pleasant View Soccer Complex in North Boulder.
Â
Colorado moves to 1-3 on the season with the win, and currently sports a 1-1 record in the Big 12. Iowa State falls to 2-2 overall and 0-1 in the conference. Next up for the Buffaloes will be a three-week, six-game road trip, scheduled to begin Friday at Oklahoma State.
