COLORADO WOMEN'S SOCCER FALLS TO MISSOURI, 6-1
November 01, 1998 | Soccer
BOULDER Â - The University of Colorado women's soccer team (5-12-3, 2-6-2) fell to the University of Missouri (9-8-1, 5-5) 6-1 here Sunday afternoon. Senior goalkeeper Sloane Cox pulled in her 200th save of the season and sophomore midfielder/forward Melissa Cartmell scored her sixth goal of the season, tying the CU record for goals in a season in the loss.
Â
"Missouri did a good job of finishing," said coach Austin Daniels. "We gave them the chances and they finished them. We have to got to cut the number of chances we give up each game. The hardest thing in soccer is when you give up a goal, because you have got to get back on track. That is part of soccer and we have got to improve upon it. Sloane had no chance on any of their goals today; they were all from point blank range."
Â
The Tigers scored in bunches; as their first three goals came within an 11 minute period. Sophomore forward Nikki Thole got her 19th goal of the season at the 9:22 mark, followed by tallies from MU's Kristin Boeker (19:28) and Amy Timmermann (22:19) to round out the Tiger scoring in the first half. Colorado answered with the Cartmell goal at 27:30 on an assist from freshman midfielder Heather Zonker to draw CU to within two, but that was as close as the Buffs would get.
Â
Missouri went on a scoring spree that saw three goals in three minutes, including two within 20 seconds of each other. MU's Erin Grimsley scored at the 55:54 mark, followed 20 seconds later by a Stephanie Brennan goal to put the Tigers up 5-1. Thole notched her 20th goal of the season at the 58:36 mark to finish the Missouri win, 6-1.
Â
The game was the final match for Colorado seniors Cox, Teri Fildey and Lauren Kulmann. Cox wraps up her career as the holder of every Colorado goalkeeping record. In addition to her 200th save of the season, Cox also recorded the 333rd save of her career, and had five shutouts this season, six in her career. She will be heading to Canada over the winter break to train with the Canadian under-20 national team before her tryout with the senior team early next year.
Â
Looking forward to 1999, Colorado loses three starters to graduation, all members of the backfield. Returning for the Buffs will be their leading scorer in Cartmell, as well as their entire starting midfield and front line. Looking towards next season, coach Daniels said, "We have got to learn to respect every team, we have got to compete harder, and we have got to finish our chances."
