COLORADO WOMEN'S SOCCER DROPS THIRD STRAIGHT TO ALABAMA, 3-0

September 18, 1998 | Soccer

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- The University of Colorado women's soccer team (1-4) dropped their third straight match to the University of Alabama (2-4) in front of a University Field record crowd of 879 here tonight. The Buffs were led by senior goalkeeper Sloane Cox who pulled in 15 saves, her third straight double-digit save effort this season.

"We need to battle as opposed to what we did in the first half," said head coach Austin Daniels. "We created our chances, but we need to stop making mental errors and give an overall better effort. I knew they were better than their record showed. They got off to a good start and capitalized on our mistakes."

Offensively, the Buffs were led by freshman forward Susan Kiefer and sophomore defender Sarah Nowfel, who managed two shots apiece. All told, Colorado recorded nine shots to Alabama's 25. The Crimson Tide was led by Tiffany Carle who netted two goals, the first coming at 28: 10 and the second in the 62nd minute of the match. The other goal came from midfielder Leah Formby at the 23:20 mark of the first half.

The game proved to be a feisty one, as four cards were awarded in the match. Senior defender Lauren Kulmann received a yellow and red card, ejecting her from the game at the 66-minute mark along with Alabama's Formby. Freshman forward Jessica Wollow also received a caution, hers coming in the 89th minute.

Cox finished off the match with a sliding save to stop Alabama freshman midfielder Ellen Sanders' breakaway attempt in the final 30 seconds of the match to keep the scoresheet at 3-0.

The Buffs now head to Baton Rouge, La. to take on Louisiana State (4-1) Sunday at 12:00 p.m., MDT. The Tigers are much improved after an 0-18 effort last season, and look to avenge a loss to the Buffs in 1996, a contest CU claimed 2-1 for its first win in program history.

Colorado returns to the friendly confines on Friday, Sept. 25 to take on Atlantic-10 champion Massachusetts at 4:00 p.m. CU is also hosting Texas vs. Maryland at 1 :00 p.m. The Buffs then face ACC foe Maryland on Sunday, Sept. 27 at 1 :00 p.m., preceded by Texas vs. UMass at 11 :00 a.m. All Colorado women's soccer games are played at Pleasant View Soccer Complex in Boulder and admission is free. PVSC is located at the intersection of Foothills Parkway and the Diagonal Highway in North Boulder.
