COLORADO WOMEN'S SOCCER TIES LOUISIANA STATE, 1-1 IN DOUBLE OVERTIME
September 20, 1998 | Soccer
BATON ROUGE, La. -Â The University of Colorado women's soccer team (1-4-1) earned a 1-1 draw here today against Louisiana State ( 4-1-2), just the second tie in the Colorado program's three year history. This was the second contest between the two programs, with Colorado taking the first meeting in 1996, 2-1.
Â
"I thought we had more chances that we didn't capitalize on," said CU head coach Austin Daniels. "When you give up a goal with 38 seconds left, you can't afford to relax in the last minute. We have got to play every game from the start to the end without any lapses. At this level, teams will punish you for that."
Â
Junior forward Shawn Kenyon thought she had the Buffs' first goal of the contest when she converted at the 18:03 mark, however the goal was disallowed when she was flagged offside, so CU had to wait until the second half to net the first goal of the match. That came at 60:05 when sophomore midfielder Andrea Matassa connected from 18 yards out on an assist from sophomore defender Allison Gausman. It was Matassa's second goal of the season, and Gausman's first assist.
Â
The Buffs held onto the 1-0 advantage until the 89:25 minute, when LSU was awarded a penalty kick,
on a Sarah Nowfel tripping foul, which was converted by LSU's Rikki Johnson, to knot the game at 1-1.
Â
Overtime was very interesting for Colorado, as the team had to finish the final 4:30 of the contest with a two-person disadvantage. Matassa earned a caution at the 104:10 mark of the match for unsportsmanlike conduct, and another yellow for the same offense at the 115:29 mark, resulting in an ejection. Matassa's two yellows were sandwiched by a Jessica Wollow red card at the 104:37 mark. Both Matassa and Wollow will be unavailable for Colorado's next match.
Â
Offensively, the Buffs produced 18 shots to LSU's 14, CU's first double-digit shot effort since their 4-1 win over George Washington on Sept. 6. Colorado also held the edge in corner kicks with 10 to LSU's 5, and saves with senior goalkeeper Sloane Cox pulling in seven to LSU's Elizabeth Swinson grabbing six. Leading the charge for CU was freshman Susan Kiefer, with a record seven shots, and freshman midfielder Heather Zonker and Gausman with three shots apiece.
Â
Colorado returns to the friendly confines on Friday, Sept. 25 to take on Atlantic-IO champion Massachusetts at 4:00 p.m. CU is also hosting Texas vs. Maryland at 1 :00 p.m. The Buffs then face ACC foe Maryland on Sunday, Sept. 27 at 1 :00 p.m., preceded by Texas vs. UMass at 11 :00 a.m. All Colorado women's soccer games are played at Pleasant View Soccer Complex in Boulder and admission is free. PVSC is located at the intersection of Foothills Parkway and the Diagonal Highway in North Boulder.
