COLORADO WOMEN'S SOCCER ROUTS MASSACHUSETTS, 4-0

September 25, 1998 | Soccer

BOULDER - The University of Colorado women's soccer team (2-4-1) returned home this weekend after consecutive road trips and a four match winless streak to shutout the University of Massachusetts (2-6) by a score of 4-0. The Buffs were led by sophomore midfielder Melissa Cartmell who notched two goals on the afternoon.

"This was a very nice performance today," said coach Austin Daniels. "It was a nice combined effort both offensively and defensively. We went forward and attacked as opposed to relaxing and played a complete game. I felt we did a very good job with our transition and getting numbers forward, and still had people back to cover defensively. I think we have finally shown what we are capable of doing in games."

The onslaught began when freshman midfielder Heather Zonker dribbled the ball from midfield to beat several UMass defenders and finished in the lower left corner of the net at the 5:12 mark. It was the quickest score for the Buffs this season, and Zonker's first collegiate goal. Next to bat was Cartmell, who took passes from Zonker then Kiefer and shot a through ball from 18 yards out to beat the keeper and give the Buffs a 2-0 lead at the 25:43 mark.

The second half was once again all Colorado, as Cartmell notched her second goal off a deflection in front of the net. "We just got back from a tough road stand, and I wanted to go out and do my best and help get a win," said Cartmell. "This was a total team effort from start to finish and I couldn't have scored without my team."

Colorado wasn't done yet, however, as redshirt freshman Susan Kiefer notched the second goal of her career, another opportunity created by beating defenders one vs. one. Kiefer took the ball from 25 yards out, beat two defenders and finished in the right corner to give the Buffs the 4-0 win at the 70:34 mark.

The shutout, the first this season for Colorado, looked to be in jeopardy in the game's final ten minutes, as UMass went forward and peppered the goal with shots. Senior goalkeeper Sloane Cox came up with three saves in that time to hang on to her first shutout of 1998. "The shutout is a total team effort. We did a better job of limiting the number of shots they took and shutting down their offense," said Cox. "It is nice to go out a senior with a couple of shutouts, so this is hopefully the first of many."

Colorado's next home match is this Sunday, Sept. 27, against Maryland at 2:00 p.m. The Terrapins defeated the University of Texas in a match played earlier in the day, 3-l. UMass will face Texas at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, preceding the CU vs. Maryland contest. All Colorado women's soccer games are played at Pleasant View Soccer Complex in Boulder and admission is free. PVSC is located at the intersection of Foothills Parkway and the Diagonal Highway in North Boulder.
