Buffs Lose Tough One 9-0 To No. 4 Nebraska
October 10, 1999 | Soccer
BOULDER - The University of Colorado women's soccer team (10-5-0, 3-3 Big 12) fell to the No. 4 University of Nebraska (12-1-1, 5-0-0 Big 12) Sunday afternoon by a final score of 9-0. The Huskers dealt the Buffs their first home loss of the season after CU won eight straight games at Pleasant View Soccer Complex, CU's home field.
Â
CU head coach Austin Daniels knew this game was going to be a tough one. "We just want to move on," Daniels commented. "It's just one of those where we say okay, whatever happened, happened. We're not going to dwell on it by any means. They punished us for the mental errors we made, so that is what we take home and work on."
Â
The game started intensely as both teams fought for possession, it was the Huskers, however, that had control of the first half. Nebraska started the scoring seven minutes into the game when Shannon Tanaka received the ball from Jenny Benson in front of the goal and shot it past CU sophomore keeper Danielle Bassett. Christine Latham continued the scoring for the Huskers when she scored two goals within 15 minutes to put Nebraska up 3-0. Latham's first goal, assisted by Kari Saunders, came at 25:59 from the right side 15 yards out and just went by a sprawling Bassett. Her second goal was a sailing ball over Bassett's head after she came out to
challenge.
Â
The Buffs upped the intensity and played a physical game when junior midfielder Zoe Pascoe received a caution after a Husker player went down. The injured Amy Walsh left the field with just 13-minutes left to go in the half. Danica Carey scored a goal nine minutes later, after entering for Walsh, to put Nebraska up 4-0 to end the half.
Â
Nebraska tallied 17 shots to CU's five during the first 45 minutes of play. Bassett made eight saves to Husker keeper Karina LeBlanc's four. This would be Bassett's total numbers for the day as freshman keeper Sara Erskine came in for the second half. The first half was a physical one for the Buffs as they had 11 fouls while Nebraska took five of their own.
Â
The Huskers came out for the second half with as much fire as they had in the first. Lindsay Eddleman scored at 51 :29 from a chip by Sharolta Nonen that went just by Erskine on the left side. Exactly four minutes later, Breanna Boyd shot from the far-left post to put the Huskers up 6-0. Kelly Rheem added to the score at 56:48 from 18 yards out after Nonen took a comer kick from the right side. Lauren Tatum put the Huskers up by eight as she chipped the ball past Erskine in the far post. Christine Gluck finished the scoring as she chipped the ball past Erskine from the outside.
Â
"I think Nebraska is a great team," remarked Erskine. "I love playing under pressure, so I was really pumped to be in there to try and help the defense. We worked hard all the way to the end, and that is what matters, even though the score was not what we wanted it to be. I think a lot of times we look at the name of the team we are playing, and psych ourselves out. You play differently than you would if you just treated it like any other game. Nerves were a factor today for everyone, and it showed."
Â
Erskine tallied three saves in the second half in her third appearance of the season. The Huskers had 27 total shots to Colorado's 10. Linda Wikstrom, Nicole Sachar, Regan Howard and Devan Hansen all saw their first game action to help the Buffs defend against Nebraska. The nine Husker goals were the second most goals scored on the Buffs in their four-year history. Nebraska also holds the record for most goals scored against CU when they tallied IO on October 13, 1996 for a final score of 10-2.
Â
"We have to be more mentally prepared for the game," said junior forward Melissa Cartmell. "Things happen and we need to recover from them. We just have to move on from this game. We have a big weekend coming up, with A&M and Texas and we need to work to be prepared."
Â
Colorado will now travel to Texas to take on Texas A&M in College Station on Friday, Oct. 15 at 6:00 p.m. MDT and continue the road trip in Austin to face the University of Texas, Sunday, Oct. 17 at noon MDT. They return home to finish the regular season facing Texas Tech on Friday, Oct. 22 and Baylor University on Sunday, Oct. 24. All home games are played at the Pleasant View Soccer Complex and are free to the public.
