Colorado Squeaks By Texas Tech 1-0
October 22, 1999 | Soccer
BOULDER, Colo.--The University of Colorado women's soccer team (11-7-0, 4-5-0 Big 12) edged by Texas Tech University (8-8-1, 4-5-0 Big 12) by a final score of 1-0 Friday afternoon. This win marks the first win for the Buffs since Oct. 8 against Iowa State (2-1) and moves their home record to an impressive 9-1 on the year.
Â
Head coach Austin Daniels was pleased with the win his team struggled for today. "Texas Tech is a dangerous team," Daniels said. "They've beat some ranked teams and you never know what you're going to get out of them. They're a good team. They're similar to us in that they play better at home. We rolled our luck a little bit today. They hit the post a couple of times, but we were organized and played hard. When you do that, you tend to get the win."
Â
During the first half, Colorado's offense was hard at work against a stingy Raider defense. Sophomore forward Suzy Kiefer was the lone Buff to notch a goal at 27:49. Kiefer picked up a loose ball six yards out after a TT defender failed to clear a Melissa Cartmell shot, and Raider keeper Brittany Peese bobbled the ball. Kiefer was there framing the goal and knocked it in for her sixth goal of the season.
Â
Texas Tech suffered an injury in the first half when all-Big 12 performer Kristy Franz went down after colliding with a Buff defender. She was taken to the hospital for x-rays. She was diagnosed with a sprained ankle, and her status is questionable.
Â
The Buffs led 1-0 at the end of 45 minutes of play. Colorado outshot Texas Tech 7-4, leading the way was junior forward Melissa Cartmell with three shots, bringing her shot total to 51 and breaking her career-high for shots in a season (50 in 1998). Sophomore keeper Danielle Bassett had an incredible first half making two acrobatic saves to keep the Buffs in the lead. The Raiders didn't allow the Buffs any comer kicks while taking one themselves. Both TT and CU played a disciplined first half taking only three and four fouls respectively.
Â
The second half was a defensive one for Colorado. The Raiders came out hard to play the last 45 minutes and the Buffs had to be on their toes. Bassett made two more saves on 12 shots to keep the shutout. The Buffs totaled 10 shots on the day to the Raiders' 16. Bassett made four total saves to keep the Buffs at 1-0 for her fifth shutout of the season.
Â
The Buffs play their last regular season game at home on Sunday, Oct. 24 at 1:00 p.m. against Baylor University. Sunday is Senior Day and co-captain Shawn Kenyon and Linda Wikstrom will be honored for their outstanding play during their careers at Colorado. The Buffs are not yet assured of a bid to the Big 12 tournament, but a win on Sunday would clinch their trip to San Antonio. All home games are played at Pleasant View Soccer Complex and are free to the public.
