Buffalo Revenge Tour Stops Utah 2-1

September 24, 1999 | Soccer

BOULDER -- The University of Colorado women's soccer team (7-3-0, 1-1-0 Big 12) defeated the University of Utah (5-3-0) by a final score of 2-1 Friday afternoon. CU now has their best record ever with seven wins and the Buffs remain undefeated at home, winning six games in a row at Pleasant View.

"We have worked hard for three years, and I just think it is paying off now," said head coach Austin Daniels. "We played a tough game against a very physical and fast Utah team. I think our team is playing with a great deal of confidence right now, and it is showing in their play."

Colorado started the scoring 30 minutes in after a Ute foul on the edge of the box. Sophomore midfielder Heather Zonker took the free kick from 20 yards out on the right side and drilled the ball over Utah's keeper Courtney Hills. The ball hit the cross bar and dropped behind the goal line. The goal is Zonker's second of the season, which is a career high for her. Zonker tallied three shots in the first half to lead the Buffs.

At the half, the Buffs led 1-0 despite being outshot I 0-6. Sophomore keeper Danielle Bassett made seven saves in the first 45 minutes of play. Colorado took four corner kicks while limiting the Utes to just two. CU played a disciplined first half taking only two fouls while Utah had six.

At 69:37 the Buffs struck again as junior forward Melissa Cartmell added to the score. She received a pass from Suzy Kiefer at midfield and dribbled her way in. She shot from the right side, 15 yards out to beat Hills. It was Cartmell's sixth goal of the season, and the 17th of her career. She has notched six goals in ten games and the goal Friday marked her third game winner. With that goal she also tied her own record for most goals in a season (she had six goals last season). This record is shared with teammate Shawn Kenyon (1996) and former Buff Donna Holyman (1997).

Utah got on the board two minutes later ending Bassett's shutout streak. Bassett went a total of 281 minutes without allowing a goal. The Utes' Amy Koefed dribbled down the field with a burst of speed and forced Bassett to come out and challenge her. Koefed maneuvered around the sprawled keeper and dumped it in the net to make the score 2-1. The Utes outshot the Buffs 19-15, with Bassett totaling a career-high 13 saves on the day. Cartmell led CU in shots with eight total, just one off her career high.

The Buffs are sitting pretty at 7-3 (.700) after ten games, with all three loses coming against ranked teams (No. 2 North Carolina 6-0, No. 11 Duke 2-0, No. 24 Missouri 6-2). CU's next home game is Wednesday, Sept. 29 at 4:00 p.m. against Denver. Colorado has now defeated Colorado College and Air Force, and will face the Pioneers for "bragging rights" for women's collegiate soccer in Colorado. All home games are free to the public.
