Missouri Slips Past Colorado 2-0 In Women's Soccer Action
October 12, 2001 | Soccer
BOULDER -Â University of Colorado women's soccer team head coach Bill Hempen coached his milestone 300th game today here at the Pleasant View soccer complex. Unfortunately, the Buffs came up on the short end of the contest against the University of Missouri Tigers by a score of 2-0.
Â
The loss gives Colorado a 1-8-1 overall record, 0-4 in the Big 12. It is the worst start since the birth of the Buffaloes soccer program in 1996. The Tigers improve to 8-4, and 3-2 in the Big 12.
Â
"It's a milestone I would like to have remembered if we had won," said Hempen on today's game. "We had our chances to score and get on top. I think if we would have scored first, the outcome might have been different."
Â
The Buffs dominated virtually the entire game, however it was Missouri that was able to get on the scoreboard first. Freshman forward Tamara Kochen took a pass from classmate Kristen Heil and fired it past diving Colorado goalkeeper Whitney Peterson in the 71st minute.
Â
Missouri's next goal came 12 minutes later when some miscommunication between Colorado freshman defender Natalie Ramella and Peterson. Ramella had tried to pass the ball back to Peterson when Missouri forward Melissa McLellan intercepted the ball and passed it into an open goal.
Â
"We battled hard one and one but some defensive mistakes cost us tonight," said Hempen on the goal.
Â
Colorado had many offensive opportunities, especially in the first half. However, bad luck for Colorado and strong play from Missouri goalkeeper Megan Duncan kept the Buffs off the scoreboard. Duncan tallied six saves on the night.
Â
"Regardless of how hard we played tonight, we just couldn't score," said Colorado defender Tiffany Booth. "We couldn't finish."
Â
The Buffaloes will finish off this weekend's home stand at Pleasant View Sunday against the University of Kansas Jayhawks. Kickoff is at 1 p.m. and as always, parking and admission are free.
