Colorado Comes Up Short Against KU Jayhawks

October 14, 2001 | Soccer

BOULDER - The University of Colorado women's soccer team couldn't capitalize on many offensive which gave the University of Kansas Jayhawks the chance to slip past them today here at the Pleasant View Soccer Complex.

The 4-0 loss leaves Colorado with a 1-9-1 record overall and 0-5-1 in the Big 12. The Jayhwaks improve to 9-3 overall and 5-1 in Big 12 play.

Colorado had an early offensive drive led by Colorado sophomore Kali Lewis that yielded two shots. one of which went over jumping Kansas goalkeeper Meghan Miller and hit the crossbar.

A Colorado foul set up Kansas· first goal in the 17th minute. Jayhawk forward Natalie Hoogveld got past the Colorado defense, forcing goalkeeper Whitney Peterson to come out. Hoogveld cut around her and passed the ball in to an open net. The goal was Hoogveld's fifth on the year.

Kansas· next goal came just four minutes later when Jayhawk midfielder Brooke Jones crossed the ball and Miller was able to volley it in to the back of the net for her second goal of the day in the 21st minute.

Following Kansas' second goal, Buffs head coach Bill Hempen cleared the bench, replacing the entire starting lineup, hoping to stir up some offense. The substitutions included junior goalkeeper Sara Erskine, who made her second appearance in goal this season. The changes produced shots by Jessica Wollow and Nikki Sachar. but failed to get the Buffs on the scoreboard before the halftime break.

"We had been sticking with the same group and just wanted to give them a chance to play," said Colorado head coach Bill Hempen. "This was the first action for some of those players. and let the starters rest and try an do something the second half."

Fourteen minutes into the second half, Kansas' Hoogveld was able to connect again to complete her hat trick. Hoogveld broke away from the Colorado defense and faked a sliding Erskine before putting the ball in the upper left-hand corner of the goal.

Colorado had scoring chances, once again by led by Lewis in the second half. Nonetheless, the Buffs went scoreless again. Colorado has failed to get on the scoreboard since the October 5th game at Oklahoma State.

Kansas got their last goal following another goalkeeper substitution by Colorado. A defensive breakdown left Buffs senior goalkeeper Danielle Bassett by herself and Jayhawk forward Monica Brothers finished on her breakaway when she put a hard shot into the upper left-hand corner. KU goalkeeper Meghan Miller was credited with the assist.

The Buffs continue the Big 12 campaign Friday, Oct. 19 at Baylor in a 6 p.m. (MST) kickoff before their last non-conference match of the season at Colorado College, Oct. 21, at 3 p.m.
