Colorado Soccer Drops 3-0 Decision To Baylor
October 19, 2001 | Soccer
WACO, Texas--The Colorado soccer team never recovered from a 1-0 halftime deficit and was outshot 20-8 en route to surrendering its fourth straight shutout, 3-0, to Baylor at the Betty Lou Mays Soccer Field here Friday night.
Â
The loss drops Colorado to 1-10-1 overall, and winless at 0-6-1 in Big 12 Conference action. Baylor inches above the .500 mark to 7-6-0 overall, 3-4-0 in league play.
Â
The Buffs had Baylor on its heels the first several minutes of the game, but the Bears capitalized on every offensive opportunity with three shots, and a corner in the first 15 minutes. Just 2:58 into the match Baylor's Emily Fukuchi scored what appeared to be the first goal of the game, but was also called for a foul on the shot and the goal was called back into Colorado's possession.
Â
Halfway through the opening stanza, Baylor sophomore Ryan Lee broke the stalemate putting her fourth goal of the season past Sara Erskine with 23:29 left in the half. It was nearly 2-0 when Ginny Rosario-Tull's free kick sailed just high of the net with 10:49 left in the half. The Bears almost made it 4-0 when back-to-back shots on goal by Candace Reilly and Lee with 8:51 and 8:33 left, respectively, both hit the cross bar above Erskine and rebounded to the edge of the 18-yard box.
Â
Colorado's three shots the first half, and two on goal by Suzy Kiefer and Jen Thais paled in comparison to Baylor's eight.
Â
Nine minutes into the second half, Reilly made up for her near hit in the first half with an unassisted goal, putting Baylor up 2-0, as did Fukuchi who took the ball in the upper left corner of the goal box from Rachel Kacslmaryk and put the ball into the lower right corner of the net past Erskine and improved the Bears lead to 3-0 with 25:28 left in the game.
Â
The clock stopped just two minutes later when Colorado defender Aimee Bugay went down with an injury and the Buffs responded with an offensive spurt that included a corner and a pair of shots on goal off the corner by Ellen Falender that were reÂdirected by Baylor defender turned goalkeeper Stephanie Dempsey.
Â
The Buffs nearly avoided the shutout when Meghan Swanzy's shot on goal from the penalty kick line with 10:22 left was tipped to the side of the goal by Dempsey. Colorado's final two shots of the game was a Tiffany Booth attempt with 6:06 left and a Natalie Romello launch from 30-feet out that hit the cross bar and rebounded back into play.
Â
The Buffs conclude their non-conference schedule Sunday when they play at Colorado College (8-2-2) in a 3 p.m. kickoff in Colorado Springs. The 2001 home campaign concludes when Colorado hosts No. 5 Nebraska Friday at 3 p.m. in Boulder.
