Postgame Notes
This is Colorado's second 3-0 start in Big 12 Conference history (seven seasons), its first since the 1996 team opened 7-0. Combined with Iowa State's loss at Oklahoma, the Buffs are in first in the Big 12 North and along with the Sooners, are one of just two undefeated teams in Big 12 action.
Today marked the 19th time that Colorado donned all black uniforms, the fourth time CU did twice in the same year and the second time in back-to-back games; the Buffs are now 11-7-1 when wearing all black.
Colorado got off to a 1-2 start for just the 15th time in its history, but today's win that improved CU to 5-2 on the year enabled the Buffs to match the previous modern era season best for wins in a season with a 1-2 start. The '74 team opened 1-2 and finished 5-6, and the 1950 team went 5-4-1 after its 1-2 start.
Today marked the third straight game that Colorado scored 14 points in the first quarter.
OT Rawle King and WR Ron Monteilh made their first career starts for the Buffs today. QB Joel Klatt saw his first collegiate action.
TB Chris Brown. A roll call of what his 23-for-167 (3 TD) afternoon accomplished:
--On his second carry, his 143rd of the season, he eclipsed the 1,000 yard mark for the year, making him the fastest back in CU history to 1,000 yards in terms of attempts; Rashaan Salaam hit 1,000 on his 149th attempt in 1994;
--He finished the game with 2,100 yards, surpassing the 2,000 plateau today in his 19th game, the second fastest Buff to accomplish that (Charlie Davis reached the mark in 17 games in 1971-72). Brown hit 2,000 on his career attempt No. 334, second to Davis' 323.
--His 55-yard run for a touchdown was his fifth 50-plus yard run of the season; that's the most by a Buff back since Salaam had five in 1994.
--Brown's two-game total of 476 yards is the fourth best in CU history.
--Brown's 3 touchdowns enabled him to jump from 13th into 7th on the all-time scoring chart (174 points, on 29 TDS in 17 regular season career games).
--Brown now has 17 first downs on 20 third/fourth down rushing attempts in 2002 (85.0%)
This was CU's first shutout since Nov. 13, 1999, when the Buffs defeated Baylor, 37-0, in Waco (a span of 32 games). In 12 quarters of competition in the Big 12, the Bears have scored in only two against the Buffs, with CU outscoring the BU 89-16 in league play (CU leads the overall series, 8-4).
QB Robert Hodge. Hodge completed 13-of-16 passes for 125 yards (0 TD/0 INT), including nine straight completions after opening with an incomplete throw. He is 38-of-55 in the last three games (69.1%).
A season-high 10 players caught passes for Colorado today.
