Soccer Ties Baylor 1-1

October 18, 2002 | Soccer

WACO - Fran Munnelly's eight shots was one shy of the school record and her goal in the 55th minute would tie the game and eventually force a pair of overtime sessions that went scoreless as Colorado tied Baylor, 1-1 at the Betty Lou Mays Soccer Field here Friday night.

With the tie, the Buffs get their first-ever result in Waco and improve to 6-6-2/1-3-2 in Big 12 play while Baylor goes to 7-6-2/1-4-2.

"From our perspective, it was a great point," said head coach Bill Hempen on the tie. "At the end of the season, any point is a great point and on the road they're harder to come by. We're not leaving here not totally empty handed."

Both teams had a combined 11 scoring opportunities in the first half. Following a Fran Munnelly shot off a free kick at the top of the penalty box in the 10th minute, Baylor challenged CU keeper Sara Erskine on three straight possessions with three shots by Ginny Rosario-Tull, Tiffany Boshers and Kristin Ruef in the 12th, 14th and 15th minutes, respectively, but failed to capitalize on any of those chances.

Colorado had three more shots in the opening half, it's last in the 43rd minute with Munnelly beating Baylor defenders Ryan Lee and April Robertson with a pass to Kristina Lamberty in the goal box who was eventually called offsides. Baylor would have the last say of the half, with Whitney Barrett's floater from the left corner of the penalty box saved by Erskine.

The Bears would get on the scoreboard on their eighth shot of the game when a play from Boshers and Reilly found Robertson who would put the ball past Erskine in the lower right corner of the net in the 52nd minute.

Colorado answered just three minutes later on a counter attack with the program's first-ever goal in Waco when a Jen Thais pass, thread through the Baylor defense, met up with Munnelly between the penalty mark and the goal box and placed in the lower right side of the net by Munnelly who never broke stride. It was Munnelly's team-leading sixth score of the season and puts the freshman alone in CU's all-time freshman points chart with 15. It also moved her from second into a tie for first with Shawn Kenyon (1996) in freshman goals scored and her career high eight shots alone in second in shots (55), just one behind Kenyon's 56. Coincidentally, the score was the perfect gift for the Arvada native's 19th birthday.

"It really motivated me," said Munnelly about approaching the freshman marks. "It was a good game between two good teams."

Colorado had three scoring chances late in the game with Munnelly and Lamberty connecting in front of the net, but called again for the offsides, and two crosses just high for headers attempted by Lamberty and Meghan Swanzy. Baylor had its chance when to break the stalemate in the 77th minute when a bobbled save by Erskine was picked up by Boshers, whose shot on the nearly open net sailed high. Baylor would continue the pressure on Colorado for the next 10 minutes, but the Buffs would come up with defensive stand after defensive clear.

"Both defenses did a great job," complimented Hempen. "I was happy with Darci's performance- playing back there most of the game after not getting a lot of time lately and Aimee (Bugay), Ashlie (Mihalcin) and Swanzy have been solid all year. I was pleased with all of them tonight."

The Buffs would break into their half of the field with three shots in the last five minutes, and a Baylor throw in with 17 seconds left in regulation and a shot by Emily Fukuchi in front of the CU net would be jumped on by Erskine to preserve the tie and send the Buffs into their third overtime of the season, Baylor's fourth.

A scoreless first overtime session forced a second which also went scoreless and the match would go in the books as a 1-1 tie.

Colorado's Big 12 road swing continues Sunday when the Buffs play at Texas Tech in a 12 p.m. (MST) kickoff. They return to Boulder for the final two home games of the 2002 season October 25 and 27 vs. Oklahoma and Oklahoma State.
