Soccer Blanks Tech 2-0

LUBBOCK, Texas - Tiffany Booth netted her second career goal against Texas Tech and Shannon Kellogg her first on her first career shot as Colorado blanked Texas Tech 2-0 at the R.P. Fuller Stadium here Sunday.
Combined with the 1-1 tie at Baylor Friday, the Buffs come away from the road trip with four much-needed points in league play, the most points in a conference weekend since a win and tie against Tech and Baylor during the '99 season. With the win Colorado improves to 7-6-2, 2-3-2 in Big 12 play while Tech falls to 2-14, and remains winless in league play at 0-8.
"Four is certainly better than three," said head coach Bill Hempen following the win. "We're doing enough right now, but we can't lose sight of where we were last year at this time."
Colorado took control of the game early, as the Buffs had three corners and four before the Red Raiders were able to get their second shot of the game off.
Following some counterattacks by both teams, Fran Munnelly took a backside cross and volleyed it to Tiffany Booth who settled the ball and her first shot of the game slipped into the left corner of the net for her second score of the season, first in conference play since she scored here in the season finale last year.
"It's ironic really, that's why I didn't turn around and shout," said Booth. "This seems to be my place, but today was a good day for opportunities."
Shannon Kellogg would make it a 2-0 game, CU's largest first-half lead of the season, in the 38th minute when she blasted a shot from 30 yards out that would sail over Megan Knauss' left shoulder into the right corner of the net for her career goal of her first career shot. Kristina Lamberty nearly made it a 3-0 contest when an Alyssa Burgess cross was a header opportunity just missed by Lamberty as the pass fell into Lippert's arms with just 2:37 left in the half.
"It was a shot that I didn't know was going in," said Kellogg. "I was surprised, and excited. I hope to do it again soon."
A combined 10 shots were taken between both teams during the second half, including a combination play between Booth and Munnelly in the 64th minute, a shot from Tech's Jordan Wicker from 20 yards out that was snagged by CU's Sara Erksine and Lamberty's second shot of the game in a crowd in front of the Red Raider net that was blocked, with neither team capitalizing.
The closest that Tech would get to a scoreboard result in the second half was a Kerri Campbell free kick in the 79th minute that Erskine would snag in mid air, but contact in a crowd forced the ball from her hands that she recovered before hitting the ground.
With an additional 10 corners taken by Colorado, the second half went without a score to give the Buffs the final 2-0 result. At the end of regulation the Buffs' domination of the game was obvious in the final statistics. They had the final advantage in shots (19-8), 10-4 on goal, and corners (10-1) forcing keeper Sara Erskine to make five saves to Knauss' eight.
"Our first half play was great today. The second half... not so much. They understood what was at stake and did what it took. Two games in 36 hours is hard to do. I'm always thinking of where we were and not so much in wins and losses, but we're playing harder... better."
Colorado returns to Boulder for its final two home games of the 2002 season vs. Oklahoma (Oct. 25, 3 p.m.) and Oklahoma State (Oct. 27, 1 p.m.). Sunday's game vs. the Cowgirls marks the last home game for seniors Aimee Bugay, Sara Erskine, Meghan Swanzy, Lindsey Galas, Heather Hawkins, Tiffany Booth and Regan Howard, and the seven will be recognized in a pre-game ceremony.
