Golf Finishes Seventh At Vegas Showdown

November 13, 2002 | Women's Golf

Henderson, Nev. - Jolene Fellhauer and Allison Rella both carded final round and team tournament low 74 here Wednesday as the Buffs carded their tournament low 309, their lowest score in seven rounds, to turn in a final score of 937 and finish in seventh place at the Las Vegas Founders Showdown at the Anthem Country Club.

Colorado's 54 hole score of 937 led all Centennial State schools, as the Buffs finished six strokes ahead of Colorado State (943) and 10 strokes ahead of Denver (947) in the teams' fourth meeting this fall.

New Mexico, the tournament leader after Tuesday's second round, held of host UNLV to take the team title with a three-day 16-over-par 880, nine strokes ahead of the Rebels (889). At the completion of play, a three-way tie between Kristi Larsen of New Mexico, Nichole Melton of Texas A&M (who was fifth after the second round) and second round leader Sunny Oh of UNLV with a 1-under-par 215 forced a playoff.

Her lowest score in eight rounds, a 74, combined with her first and second round tallies of 79 and 80, Fellhauer went from CU's No. 3 finisher after Monday's first round to CU's low tournament score 233 to inch from 29th to 28th over the 54-hole Showdown.

Fellhauer would finish just three strokes ahead of teammate Maria Persson Gulda, who struggled after Monday's opening round and turned in a three-day scorecard that read 76-78-82-236, her best effort in her first fall under the Flatirons. On the other end of the spectrum, No. 1 player Erin Kerr struggled on the 6,129-yard course and turned in a 76-78-83-237, her highest scorecard of the fall season.

Kerr finished in a three-way tie for 36th alongside sophomore Allison Rella (81-82-74-237). Rella and Lynn Ann Moretto (86-80-79-245) made the Buffs' greatest first to third-round improvement as Rella's final round 74 was seven strokes slimmer than her 81 after the first 18 holes and Moretto's effort was identical, carding a 79 after opening the Showdown with an 86.

Today's round marked the final one of the fall season for Anne Kelly and Co. The Buffs begin the spring portion of their 2003 schedule Feb. 24 at the Arizona Wildcat Invitational in Tucson.
