W-Golf Finishes 17th In Arizona Sun

February 25, 2003 | Women's Golf

Tucson - Sophomore Allison Rella shaved 10 strokes from her second round score to card a team-low third round 76 while the Buffs found themselves matching Monday's first round (325) to finish in 17th with a 54-hole total 969 at the close of the Arizona Wildcat Invitational here Wednesday.

No. 11 Pepperdine combined for a third round low 290 to improve it's three day total to 876 and take the team title with 14 strokes to spare. Southern California couldn't catch the Waves and settled for second (890), just five strokes ahead of third place Arizona State (895).

Arizona's Erica Blasberg held on to the lead to claim medallist honors as the top-ranked player in the country shot a 69-73-68-210 for the four-stroke win over USC's Mikaela Parmlid (214), who dominated the third round with an individual tournament low 5-under-par 66 today. Washington's Lindsay Morgan finished third (215).

Rella's comeback improved her individual standing from a share of 95th after the second round to 83rd after the final hole. Erin Kerr succumbed to the Arizona National Golf Course and carded a final round and near season low 81, and fell to 41st, which was the team's high finish. Jolene Fellhauer suffered the same fate as Kerr and posted an 83 Wednesday to finish in the lower half of the 99 player field.

Maria Persson Gulda, who was unable to find her nitch on the desert course, turned in a collegiate career high 87 and would have to settle for part of a three-way share of 87th place. Joey Stetser shot her best round of the invitational, an 85, to claim sole possession of 93rd with a three-day total 258.

With their first tournament in over three months under their belts, the Buffs will look to shake off the rough spring start and make a comeback when they play at the Oregon Duck Invitational, March 10-11 in Eugene, Ore.
