W-Golf Finishes Eighth In Oregon

March 11, 2003 | Women's Golf

Junction City, Ore. - Freshman Maria Persson Gulda carded a career low 73 and the Colorado women's golf team shot 304, it's third lowest round of the season, best of the spring, in the third and final turn of Oregon Duck Invitational Tuesday, but the Buffs slipped one spot in the team standings to finish eighth with a two day 943 in the second spring tournament of the spring.

"While it hurt us not having Jolene (Fellahauer, who is out with a back injury), we're just starting to play the way we're capable. But we're still upset because we know we can play better. But today was a better indication of where we can be," said head coach Anne Kelly.

Washington State held on to its first day lead, and the Cougars' three round total 896 was 18 strokes ahead of runner-up San Diego State (914) and third place Missouri (916). WSU's Kim Welch also held on to the top of the leaderboard as her three round 209 was 7-under-par on the 5,953 yard Shadow Hills Country Club course and a convincing 14 strokes ahead of individual runner-up Shayna Miyajima (223) of San Diego State and 17 ahead of WSU teammate Maria Kostina (226).

Kostina was just a single stroke ahead of Colorado senior Erin Kerr, who shaved six strokes off her second round loop to card a 1-over-par 73 (a tournament and spring low) and her three round 227 would improve her from ninth after Monday's second round to a share of fourth after Tuesday's.

Persson Gulda's collegiate best 73 was a 10-stroke improvement from Monday's second round 83. The final round improved her 13 positions to finish 21st with a 234, the second highest finish of her career. Allison Rella carded a final round 77 to finish 27th with a two day total 237, her best 54-hole effort since the fall finale in Las Vegas. Joey Stetser rounded out the Colorado scorecard with an 81 Tuesday and her tournament 245 would dropped the sophomore in 47th. In her first tournament since October, Robin Worthington finished in 60th place (259).

The Buffs are off for almost two weeks when they co-host the Mountain View Collegiate in Tucson.

"Hopefully we have a good week of practice on a consistent basis. It's just a matter of playing and figuring out how to score when you're not playing well. Our short game will definitely be an area of concentration in the next week and a half. We'll be chipping and putting a lot."
