Soccer Falls In OT To UNH

September 13, 2002 | Soccer

BOULDER - A New Hampshire goal in the fifth minute of overtime sent the Colorado soccer team home on the short end of a 2-1 score, and halted the Buffs' home win at two at the Pleasant View Soccer Complex here Friday.

The Wildcats' Cyndi Poehner scored her first goal of the season in the 95th minute of play when her shot from just yards in front of the goal hit the cross bar and came down in goal.

"It's okay," said head coach Bill Hempen on the score. "It's a shame. I have no problem with it... it was in."

The loss drops Colorado to 2-2 during non-conference play while New Hampshire improved to 3-2 prior to facing Colorado College on Sunday in Colorado Springs.

The Buffs dominated the first 45 minutes of play and got on the scoreboard early when sophomore Nicholle Taylor took an Alyssa Burgess serve and beat Erin Margentino on the left side of the goal for her second score in as many games. Despite the Buffs' domination, UNH would score on their only shot of the first half when Jackie Wishoski beat both Darci Smerchek and Aimee Bugay about 15 yards out in the middle of the field and would put her first goal of the season behind CU frosh Jeanne Rankin in the 26th minute of play.

Tied 1-1 at the break, the Buffs had the clear advantage in shots (12-1), corner kicks (2-1) while forcing UNH keeper Kristen Ouellette to make four saves.

The Wildcats would play an evenly-matched second half and hold the Buffs scoreless to force the overtime session. In the second half, the UNH defense only allowed five shots and a single corner kick. CU's last chance to win the game in regulation on an Alyssa Burgess shot from the left post extended with 27 second left. The attempt was saved by Elizabeth MacKay.

"It's an unfair game sometimes," commented Hempen on the 1-1 tie at the end of regulation. "It's a humbling game. They made us work for it and we didn't stand up to the challenge, which was a little disappointing. They were running at us at all angles and weren't allowing us to penetrate the second half."

Then on the lone shot of the overtime session, Poehner would register her first goal of the game in just the fifth minute of the golden-goal period.

"They scored and we didn't... that's the bottom line," said Hempen on the least dramatic score of the season.

Colorado will complete its homestand when the Buffs host Ole Miss at noon on Sunday at the Pleasant View Soccer Complex. The Rebels came into the weekend undefeated at 4-0 and took Wyoming to a 2-2 tie Friday night in Laramie, Wyo..

"Right now we're pretty emotional and pretty down. But we're going to do everything we can, swallow hard and come back with a strong effort," concluded Hempen.
