Soccer Ties Missouri, 2-2

September 29, 2002 | Soccer

COLUMBIA, Mo. - Colorado had two scoring chances in the final minutes of the second overtime period, but couldn't convert either as the Buffs tied Missouri, 2-2, in their first overtime game of the season at Audrey J. Walton Stadium here Sunday.

Both teams had legitimate chances to score off direct free kicks just outside the box in the fourth and 14th minutes of play respectively. A Lindsey Galas foul gave Missouri a free kick with 41:35 left in the half that was taken by Karen Bauer, blocked and the immediate rebound taken by Adriene Davis which went high allowing CU keeper Jeanne Rankin to get a first on the ball and deflect it over the cross bar. Ten minutes later Fran Munnelly's free kick was blocked and her rebounded shot taken by Meghan Swanzy sailed high.

When it seemed that the first half would end in a scoreless tie despite Missouri's advantage in shots (10-9) and corners (4-3), a low Swanzy shot from 10 feet outside the box off a broken up Colorado free kick in the 32nd minute trickled between the legs and under the gloves of Missouri keeper Megan Duncan and into the right corner of the net for the 1-0 lead.

The Tigers nearly tied the game with nine minutes in the half as Missouri created a flurry of activity in front of the Colorado net allowing MU's Jennifer Nobis to get a low shot off which rebounded back into play off Colorado keeper Jeanne Rankin's lower legs. Four seconds later Emmakate Young beat CU defender Aimee Bugay, forcing Rankin out of position for a shot just feet from the goal line which hit the right post and eventually wide right.

But the Buffs would hold off Missouri and take the 1-0 advantage into the break for just the third time this season, first since a 1-0 halftime edge over Wyoming on Sept. 6.

Just two minutes into the second half, Missouri's Adrienne Davis beat Swanzy in the right side of the box, turned full circle and her shot from 10 feet out knotted the game at a goal apiece. Colorado answered in the 49th minute when Big 12 Freshman of the Week Fran Munnelly took a Jen Thais serve and split Missouri defenders Ashley Gibbs and Carrie Crossett and placed the ball to the low left center of the net to lift Colorado over the Tigers, 2-1.

Missouri would tie the game for the second time in the 70th minute when Amber Swinehart's second shot of the game resulted in a goal that went over substituted Sara Erskine's left shoulder, capitalizing on a Missouri dominated passing possession and eventually forcing an overtime session, CU's first of the season, Missouri's fifth.

A Missouri dominated, but scoreless, first sudden victory period forced a second and was nearly over 1 minute 40 seconds in when Adrienne Davis' free kick just inches outside the box was saved by Erskine, bounced out of her hands to the left post and landed on by the Colorado keeper. Colorado was given the identical opportunity with 41 seconds to play and a corner with 20 seconds remaining, but wouldn't capitalize on either, putting the game in the books as a 2-2 tie after the two golden-goal sessions.

The Buffs return to Boulder for a four-match homestand beginning Friday and Sunday when they take on back-to-back top-10 opponents No. 8 Texas A&M and fourth-ranked Texas in their Big 12 home opener.
