Soccer Improves To 2-0

September 06, 2002 | Soccer

BOULDER - Senior Tiffany Booth scored her second career game-winning goal in the seventh minute of play as the Buffs shutout Wyoming 1-0 at the Pleasant View Soccer Complex here Friday.

Combined with last Friday's 3-0 blanking over Fresno State, the Buffs have put together back-to-back shutouts for the first time in the program's seven-year history and kick off the season 2-0, another first on the pitch in Boulder.

Booth put the Buffs on the board when sophomore Nicholle Taylor split the Wyoming defense with a pass to Booth from approximately 20 yards out. Booth went on to challenge the Cowgirls' Jennifer Kinner forcing Wyoming keeper Lori Scheider to the left post, when Booth placed the ball towards the right corner.

"Soccer is a crazy game and that's the fear. Give the kids credit for an early goal. It can sometimes be good.... and bad," said head coach Bill Hempen.

Keeping the Cowgirls on their heels most of the first half, the Buffs outshot their border rivals 7-0 in the opening stanza, but slowly let them back in the game in the second half, playing a methodical pace that allowed a pair of shots on goal, both of which freshman keeper Jeanne Rankin rejected.

"We allowed Wyoming to stay in the game by not finishing chances," said Hempen. "We've got to get better come Big 12 time."

One of those chances was a near-second goal for Booth when in the 28th minute she had a shot at a near-open net, took the shot with her left foot, which went wide right. With just six minutes left in the half, senior Meghan Swanzy had a shot on goal with Scheider out of the net, but the shot was saved by Wyoming defender Kara Walters. Booth had an opportunity for a third score with under 10 minutes to play when a pass from Lindsey Galas resulted in a solid low shot that just went right of the post.

"We didn't play quite as well as we wanted," said senior tri-captain Aimee Bugay. "But a win is a win. We are a lot stronger and organized on defense. Teams we've been playing haven't had a lot of offensive chances. Hopefully more goals will eventually come and the games won't be this close."

The Buffs leave for Minneapolis Saturday morning to take on Minnesota on Sunday, Colorado's first game away from Boulder. The Gophers are 1-1 with a 2-0 loss to Washington State and a 1-0 win over Montana. Colorado returns to Boulder on Friday, Sept. 13 vs. New Hampshire in a 4 p.m. start at the Pleasant View Soccer Complex.
