Postgame Notes
FIRST ACTION: Three more Buffs joined the 13 last week in playing for the first time in a CU uniform. DB Lovell Houston started, also joining OT Josh Foster as players to start for the first time for the Buffs as a senior. WR D.J. Hackett also saw his first action, as did DB Gerett Burl, who is the ninth true freshman to play in 2002.
TE Beau Williams caught his first career touchdown reception this evening, coming on the fourth catch of his career (he had one in 2000 as a sophomore, and two last week against CSU). The TD catch was for 22 yards, his previous three receptions totaled 15 yards.
On San Diego State's first scoring drive, the Aztecs utilized a 4-for-4 effort on third down to get down the field; SDSU gained 49 yards on those four plays, but were limited to 12 yards on six first down plays (and to 14 on five second down plays).
LB Akarika Dawn, a true freshman, scored a touchdown the first time he touched the ball in his career, returned a fumble eight yards for a score. Nine Buffaloes in the last 10 years have returned their first career interception for touchdowns, but Dawn's the first to do it with a fumble in that span. Combined with true frosh Jeremy Bloom's 75-yard punt return for a score against CSU, it's the first time two different true freshmen have scored TDs in back-to-back games since 1991, when QB Kordell Stewart scored against Minnesota and TB Lamont Warren against Stanford.
TB Chris Brown had the sixth 100-yard rushing game of his career, which ties him for the 14th most in CU history. The 185 yards are the second most of his career, trailing the 198 against Nebraska in 2001 and edging the 182 against Texas in the 2001 Big 12 Championship game. He had 29 attempts, 27 for gains, one for zero, one for a loss and 13 for first downs (with two for touchdowns). He now has 1,225 career rushing yards, as he jumped from 42nd to 33rd on CU's all-time list, and with 114 career points, he is 28th (passing Mitch Berger, who was in attendance here tonight; he's the St. Louis Rams punter and he's in town to play the Broncos Sunday).
Prior to leaving the game at halftime due to a concussion, QB Craig Ochs had 125 yards of total offense, enough to propel him from 10th into eighth place on CU's all-time list with 3,530 yards. He passed two other quarterbacks, Steve Vogel (3,501, 1981-84) and David Williams (3,408m 1973-75).
San Diego State set a record for the most completions in a game against Colorado with 39, breaking the old mark of 37, set by Fresno State in the '93 Aloha Bowl. The 59 passing attempts rank fourth all-time against CU; the 359 passing yards did not crack the top 10. Kassim Osgood led the way with 14 for 178 (neither are records).
Both Colorado and San Diego State had 401 yards of total offense tonight; the last time that happened was in 1968, when CU and Iowa State both had 396 yards (and both ran 78 plays).
COLORADO INJURIES: QB Craig Ochs (concussion, his third at CU in the last 13 months; A CAT scan at Boulder Community Hospital was negative. Listed as DAY-TO-DAY by CU trainer Steve Willard). WR Jeremy Bloom (turf toe, PROBABLE for USC); CB Donald Strickland (re-aggravated hip pointer, PROBABLE); CB Phil Jackson (sprained shoulder, DAY-TO-DAY); DB Clyde Surrell (sprained shoulder, DAY-ATO-DAY); DE Gabe Nyenhuis (burner, PROBABLE).
SAN DIEGO STATE POSTGAME NOTES
TEAM NOTES
San Diego State is 0-2 on the season but has statically challenged two of the better programs on the West Coast. The Aztecs have outgained Fresno State and Colorado, 679-663. Other stats in San Diego State's favor include first downs (38-36), passing yardage (599-332), total plays (143-141). The Aztecs have also committed six fewer penalties and have penalized 79 fewer yards. Last season the Bulldogs and Buffaloes combined to go 21-6.
San Diego State passed for 359 yards against Colorado. That is the highest total for an Aztec squad since throwing for 393 against Colorado State on Oct. 28, 2000.
Although the passing output did not crack the school's top ten chart, the 59 attempts tie for the fourth highest total in school history and the most since Sept. 22, 1990 when SDSU threw 63 times against Brigham Young. The 39 completions are the third best total in school history, one shy of the Aztec record of 40 set in 1985 against Oregon and duplicated in 1987 vs. Stanford. Both of those games occurred at home making the Colorado performance the most completions in a road game in school history.
San Diego State's 80-yard, 15-play drive that resulted in Garric Simmons' four-yard touchdown run was the longest in terms of plays and time of possession (7:08) this season.
That drive marked the third 80-yard-plus touchdown drive this season, all of which resulted in Aztec touchdowns.
The two first-half touchdowns by the Aztecs marked touchdowns in four straight quarters since trailing Fresno State 10-0, at halftime in the opener. San Diego State scored 28 points in a span of 32:24, ending with the Michael Franklin 31-yard touchdown run.
San Diego State's opponents have started five drives in Aztec territory this season and have been held off the scoreboard three times. For the season, Aztec opponents have 10 points in the five drives that have begun in SDSU territory. Tonight, Colorado was 1-for-2 in those situations, scoring one touchdown.
INDIVIDUAL NOTES
J.R. Tolver's first reception of the game ran his consecutive games with a catch streak to 27. He finished the game with eight receptions for 79 yards, moving him past Az Hakim and Gary Garrison into sixth place on the SDSU career reception list with 152. He also makes an appearance on the school's receiving yardage chart with 2,024. That figure is good for 10th place. Through two games Tolver has 18 receptions for 237 yards.
Adam Hall, in his third career start at SDSU recorded career bests in passing yards (359), completions (39) and attempts (59). In addition, Hall did not throw an interception in the contest. For the season, the junior who entered the season with 94 career attempts, is 64-of-96 (66.7 percent) for 599 yards with one touchdown and interception.
In just his second game as an Aztec, senior Kassim Osgood caught 14 passes for 178 yards. It is the second straight game in which an Aztec player has pulled in 150+ receiving yards after Tolver posted 158 at Fresno State.
Michael Franklin's first-half touchdown run was the first of his career and it came on just his fourth career carry.
The first-half rushing touchdowns for San Diego State marked just the second TD in Garric Simmons' career and the first for Michael Franklin. Simmons previous touchdown came on a 10-yard dash in the fourth quarter at Arizona State on Sept. 8, 2001, one year ago tomorrow.
