Hogan Fifth In WUG Slalom

January 26, 2003 | Skiing

TARVISIO, Italy - University of Colorado freshman Brad Hogan finished fifth in the slalom here Sunday, the final event as the 2003 World University Games came to a close.

Hogan, the top USA seed at No. 14, navigated the icy, packed course in a two-run time of 1:37.66. He was ninth after his morning run, where a late error on the final face cost him some time, but he had the fifth fastest run in the afternoon to climb four notches into fifth. The University of Denver's David Lamb finished 15th in 1:39.81, despite starting 31st.

Hogan's younger sister, Erika, won a bronze medal in the same event on Saturday, the first medal won by an American in skiing here in over a decade. Though he didn't match his sibling's medal effort, he did post four top 18 finishes here this week: in addition to fifth in the slalom, he was sixth in the downhill,11th in the Super-G and 18th in the giant slalom.

Switzerland's Michael Weyermann and Austria's Martin Krosleitner shared the gold medal, as both their runs totaled an identical 1:35.88 time.

CU's other two skiers Sunday, sophomore Tyler Shepherd (the No. 21 seed) and senior Jed Schuetze (No. 22) both did not finish their first runs, as they skied off the course. They were not alone, as only 51 of the 112 skiers in the field posted a finishing time.

Team USA's only other medal here so far was a silver in women's figure skating by Minnesota-Duluth's Angela Lien. Russia walked away with the medal count, earning 31 including 11 gold, with host Italy, Japan and the Ukraine all tying for second with 14. The United States won two, a silver and a bronze, the latter by Hogan, a CU freshman, in the women's slalom.

The alpine Buffs return home to join their nordic mates in hosting the CU Invitational/Laura Sharpe Flood Memorial ski meet this Friday and Saturday at Eldora Ski Resort, just west of Boulder.
