COLORADO SHUTS OUT MINNESOTA 6-0 IN PROGRAM RECORD SPREE
October 10, 2003 | Soccer
BOULDER - Colorado sophomore Kathryn Grandinetti and senior Orly Ripmaster each scored a pair of goals, while Ashlie Mihalcin and Katie Griffin each added a score in Colorado's school-record 6-0 blanking of Minnesota here Friday, avenging CU's 3-2 loss to the Golden Gophers a year ago.
In Colorado's most dominant game of the season, the game was all CU from the opening kickoff to the final horn, tying or bettering eight team and individual school records in the process. Those records include single season wins (11), single game points (18), goals (6), scoring margin (6), season shutouts (6), and individual single season and freshman class goals (Katie Griffin, 8), while Jessica Keller removed the asterisk from the single season shutouts mark with six.
"It is awesome to show so much diversity with so many different girls scoring goals," said Grandinetti.
Grandinetti netted the quickest goal in program history when she headed a Katie Griffin pass from six yards over Minnesota keeper Karli Kopietz in the fourth minute. It was Grandinetti's third goal of the season and the fourth Grandinetti/Griffin combination goal of the season.
Grandinetti made it a 2-0 advantage in the 33rd minute when Ellen Falender's pass to Maddy Minnis off the right post forced Kopietz to the post as Minnis passed the ball to Grandinetti who one-timed it past the defender."
"I just saw Katie get it and she chipped in an awesome ball," said Grandinetti of the goal. "I was able to get up and knock the ball in."
The Buffs amassed four second-half scores beginning with Orly Ripmaster's in the 47th minute when she took a throw in from Maddy Minnis and one-touched it to herself before taking the shot, which sailed over Kopietz. Katie Griffin's school-record eighth goal of the season came 78 seconds later when she worked her way through the Gopher defense and lifted a shot over Kopietz.
"Right now I decided I have to start scoring when I get opportunities," said Ripmaster. "It's about time I started to finish. It feels good to see the ball go in."
Kopietz gave up a rebound on an Alyssa Burgess shot in the 60th minute, setting up Ashlie Mihalcin's fourth goal of the season, which went into the upper left corner of the goal. Ripmaster put the nail in the coffin when she converted Fran Munnelly's corner kick in the 62nd minute.
"It's really my teammates making it easy," Ripmaster added. "They give me perfect opportunities."
The final stats showed a complete domination in shots (24-4), shots on goal (13-2) and forced Karli Kopietz to make seven saves to Jessica Keller's two. Keller picked up her school-record sixth shutout of the season.
Colorado now begins an incredibly challenging part of its schedule as four of the next six contests are against ranked opponents and half are away from Boulder. Both will be the case when the Buffs play at No. 18 Oklahoma Sunday in Norman, who squared off against Nebraska Friday night.
