WOMEN'S GOLF IMPROVES TO FOURTH AT AZTEC INVITE

October 21, 2003 | Women's Golf

CHULA VISTA, Calif. ?Hannah Hoch was a single stroke shy of tying a single round school record, but did establish a freshman-class best, when she carded a final round 68 to help the Colorado women's golf team to their second lowest round of the season, a 219, to improve to, and finish, a season-best fourth, at the Lady Aztec Invitational here Tuesday.

“It's what we've been waiting for all year" to put four good scores together at the same time,” said head coach Anne Kelly.  “That's why we've been so frustrated lately. We know we have the potential to play better than we have been.”

Host San Diego State had separated themselves early from the field on Monday, and carrying that momentum, went on to win their own Invitational with a three-round 878, 13 strokes ahead of runner up Nevada (891) which fished just ahead of BYU (893) and Colorado (899).

San Diego State's Jenna Wilson shot a final round 5-under-par 67 to further distance herself from the field to claim medalist honors with a three-round 211, ahead of CSU-Northridge's Elizabeth Allen (217), Nevada's Alan Condon and BYU's Margaret Gibby (218) and CU's Maria Persson Gulda's 219.

Maria Persson Gulda was CU's low score for a second straight tournament and her fifth-place finish is a career best for the sophomore who never strayed further than 2-over-par in any round this week for a final 73-72-74-219, her 54-hole career low.

Allison Rella shot a final round 73 and her two-day total 230 gave her a share of 22nd place.

“Allie finished with two solid rounds, which really helped her confidence.”

Hoch's comeback was the Buffs' strongest of the season.  After Monday's first two rounds, the freshman was sitting in 75th place with a 21-over-par 165 and blistered the 6,021 yard Auld Course Tuesday for a career and CU freshman best 68, to improve 32 places and finish 32nd with an 80-85-68-233.

`

After a strong start Monday, junior Joey Stetser  had problems with a stiff neck and turned in a final team low round 83 to fall to 37th (75-77-83-235).  Gina Rodriguez rounded out CU's final round scoring with a 76, tying her collegiate career low.  Her 54-hole 237 earned her 43rd.

“Joey's neck stiffened up making it hard for her to play, despite how hard she tried to battle through it.  Gina played some good golf this week, she just got tired.”

The Buffs will have two weeks off before they return to the islands to play at the Rainbow Wahine Invitational in Honolulu Nov. 4-5.
