W-GOLF FINISHES 12TH AT KENT YOUEL

November 06, 2003 | Women's Golf

Oahu, Hawai'i ?Sophomore Maria Persson Gulda just barley missed her second straight top-10 finish when she carded a 76-72-78-226 to finish 11th overall while the University of Colorado women's golf team shot a final round 310, their best round of the Kent Youl Invitational, but finished 12th with a three round total 935, their highest score of the fall season, but best three round total in what was formerly tabbed the Rainbow Wahine Invitational.

“It was not a good day for us at all,” said head coach Anne Kelly.  “We just couldn't put four solid rounds together, which unfortunately continues to plague us.”

Oklahoma shot 293 in the final loop and the Sooners' three straight sub-300 rounds 297-299-293-889 was a slim three-stroke advantage over Washington which closed the gap with a tournament low final round 289 for a three round total 891 and second place, which was a comfortable 16 strokes ahead of third place San Jose State (907)

Higher than average scores continued to plague the field of 89 players, but Washington's Paige Mackenzie (72-71-71-214) held off Oklahoma's Lisa Meldrum (71-74-69-215) while a group tied for third was six strokes back with a 54-hole 221.

Colorado took three strokes off its second round score, in part to having to count just one round in the 80s compared to Tuesday, when Kelly had to count two rounds in the 80s as part of her team score.

Freshman Hannah Hoch made the team's strongest second to third round improvement, with a nine stroke improvement of 73 in the final round.  Her three round 76-82-73-231 bumped her from 47th after Tuesday's rounds to a final share of 30th in the individual standings.

Allison Rella matched her first round score of 81 in Wednesday's final loop, and finished 56th with a two-day 81-76-81-238.  Robin Worthington's 79-83-78-240 moved her up on the leaderboard three places to finish 59th.  While Joey Stester was unable to contribute to the team score for a third straight tournament round and just never found her game with an 84-84-83-251 and fell to 84th.

The Buffs will close out the fall schedule Nov. 10-12 at the Las Vegas Founders Women's Collegiate Showdown.

“Maybe its time to make changes in the lineup,” concluded Kelly.
