AUSTIN, Texas - Heather Schreiber and Stacy Stephens both had double-doubles and Texas jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the first four minutes of the game and lead by as much as 27 points as the No. 6-ranked Longhorns handed Colorado their first loss in four games, 75-55, at the Erwin Center in Austin, Texas.
Schreiber had 17 points and 13 rebounds while Stephens, a finalist for the Naismith Player of the Year award and reigning Big 12 Player of the Week, contributed 14 points and had 10 boards for Texas, which won their sixth game in a row. Jamie Carey had 15 points for the Longhorns
Randie Wirt led Colorado in scoring for the first time this season, putting up 11 points while Tera Bjorklund, who was held to only six points and one rebound in the first half after getting into early foul trouble, and Kate Fagan had 10 points apiece. Sabrina Scott had seven points and a team-high nine rebounds.
Texas (18-5, 11-1) took their biggest lead of the first half, 35-18, on a lay up by Heather Shreiber with 3:17 to go, but Colorado (18-5, 8-4) scored nine points-all on free throws-to end the half and cut their deficit to 39-27.
The Buffaloes only managed to put in eight points in the first 10 minutes of the second half while Stacy Stephens and former Horizon High School product Jamie Carey took care of things on the Texas offensive side. Stephens scored eight points during Colorado's 10 minute slump, which was ended by a jumper from Amber Metoyer, and Carey knocked down a couple of 3-pointers.
Colorado will return home on Saturday at 2 p.m., to take on Missouri. The Buffaloes will be trying to avenge a 71-52 loss suffered on Feb. 2 in Columbia, Mo.
