Golf Finishes Fifth In Mtn View
March 23, 2003 | Women's Golf
Tucson - Allison Rella carded a team-low 73 and Colorado shot a final round 307 to finish in a three-way share for fifth with a three-round total 917in the fourth annual Mountain View Collegiate on the Saddlebrook Golf Course here Sunday.
"Alli played really well today. She's been trying so hard to shoot low numbers and had just a few more putts fallen, she would have been under par today," complemented head coach Anne Kelly.
Kansas State's Christine Boucher came from behind to take medallist honors with a 76-71-70-217 scorecard, a slim stroke ahead of Louise Kenney of Iowa State who carded a 54-hole 74-72-72-218.
International Pacific College (Brisbane, Australia), which was in third after Monday's opening rounds, fired a 293 Sunday and leapfrogged to the team title with a two-day total 890. They took the team challenge with a two-stroke advantage over Iowa State (892) which finished a pair ahead of Kansas State (894).
Erin Kerr, who was in second after Monday's first two rounds, finished in ninth with a 54-hole total 223 after the senior carded a 76 today. She was in position for the win as she was 3-under early in the final round, but then she triple bogeyed the 10th hole and a comeback attempt with birdies on the ensuing greens fell short.
Rella was Colorado's most improved player Sunday as she moved up 14 places with her 1-over-par 73 and a final score of 228, which gave her a top-20 finish. Both Maria Persson Gulda and Jolene Fellhauer finished in a tie for 35th as both recorded 235 final scores with Persson Gulda shooting 81 on Sunday and Fellhauer, 78.
Joey Stetser rounded out the CU scorecard with a final round 80, which put her in 39th in the final standings while Robin Worthington, playing as an individual, fired an 83 today.
The Buffs will have the week to enjoy the University's spring break vacation, get a few rounds in on their own, and re-group for team workouts March 31.
"It's probably good timing as they are all going places where they can play," said Kelly in response to Colorado's latest winter storm.
They close out the regular season April 7-8 at the Utah Dixie Classic in St. George, Utah prior to the Big 12 Championships in Columbia. While today's fifth place finish was disappointing, Kelly feels like her team is definitely making strides.
"This spring has been a challenge between the weather and some injuries. We've had too many three-putts, so that's an area where we need to get better... and we will."
