W-Golf In Fourth At Dixie Classic

April 07, 2003 | Women's Golf

St. George, Utah - Both Allison Rella (74) and Joey Stetser (76) carded spring season lows on The Point and Woodbridge tournament courses, and the Buffs have a share of fourth place with a first full round 303 at the Utah Dixie Classic here Monday.

For just the fourth time this year Colorado counted four rounds in the 70s for their best ever start in the 17th annual women's classic and fourth lowest round of the year.

"Everyone played well today," said head coach Anne Kelly. "Everyone hit the ball real well, we just had a few putting problems."

San Francisco has control of both the individual and team leaderboard as the Lady Dons shot an 8-over-par 296 and have a three stroke lead over UC-Irvine (299), last year's Dixie Classic winner. Nevada (301) sits just two strokes behind UC-Irvine while both Colorado and Idaho share fourth place with a first round 303.

USF's Jordan Auten has a 27-hole total 107, a single stroke ahead of teammate Joan Shimozaki (108).

Rella's low score puts her in a share of 24th after the initial round and with a 41 on the front nine of the second round, is +7 through 27 holes today. Erin Kerr, nine strokes off the lead and one behind Rella, is in 36th with a first round 75 and also teed off the second round with a nine-hole score of 41 on the Sunbrook Golf Course for a +8 total Monday.

Also turning in her best round of the spring and one shy of her career low, Joey Stetser is in 58th with a first round 76. But the soph struggled on the front nine of the second round with a 43 and will go into Tuesday's finale 11-over. She sits a pair of strokes ahead of Maria Persson Gulda, whose first round 78 puts her in 51st when counting a 40 on the front nine of the second round.

Veterans Jolene Fellhauer (80) and Robin Worthington (84) struggled in the opening loop and their woes carried over to the second round as they sit +14 and +28 respectively after 27 holes.

The 2003 regular season will come to a close Tuesday when the Buffs play the final 27 holes of the 17th annual women's classic. The Big 12 tournament is next on the schedule, April 21-23 in Columbia, Mo.

"We're really encouraged with the first round and just have to pull out the rest of the second and third."
