Dayton, Ohio. - The University of Dayton announced today that Jim Jabir, assistant coach at the University of Colorado, will take over as head coach of the women's basketball program. Jabir becomes the eighth coach and the first male head coach in UD's history.
"We're happy for Jim in his new head coaching position," said CU head coach Ceal Barry from the women's Final Four. "We wish him and his family well. Word has spread fairly quickly here in Atlanta regarding the vacancy at CU. I've already received numerous inquiries about the position."
"We are pleased to have Jim join the University of Dayton community," UD Vice President and Director of Athletics Ted Kissell said. "Jim has strong head coaching experience and delivered a championship at Marquette. He will get us to the next level."
Jabir, 40, had been a head coach for 16 seasons prior to coaching at CU with an all-time career mark of 220-223. His broad coaching experience ranges from the Big East Conference to the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.
"I see the University of Dayton women's basketball position as having great potential," said Jabir. "I am excited and pleased to be named head coach. I'm looking forward to Atlantic 10 championships and NCAA Tournaments."
Before his stint at Colorado, Jabir was at the helm of Providence College for six seasons, 1996-2002. During his last three years, the Friars' record improved with each season and in his final season, the Friars finished 13-15 overall and eighth of 14 schools in the prestigious Big East, the highest finish for Providence since the Big East went to a one division format.
