W-Golf Finishes Fourth At Dixie Classic
April 08, 2003 | Women's Golf
ST. GEORGE, UTAHÂ - The encouragement that head coach Anne Kelly felt following Monday's first round 303 quickly turned to disappointment as the Buffs carded a 320 in the second, but rebounded in the third loop to turn in a final round 303 and finish with a 54-hole total 926 for fourth place here as the 17th annual Utah Dixie Classic came to a close.
UNLV improved from seventh on Monday to toke the team title with a tournament low third round 292 for a two-day total 906. The Rebels edged first-round leader San Francisco (909) by three strokes. Denver improved from eighth Monday to third Tuesday with a 918, just eight strokes ahead of the Buffs. Colorado's fourth-place finish is its best of the spring season, and best since back-to-back third place efforts during the fall and in an all-important regional contest, defeated nine of 10 west regional opponents.
San Francisco's Jordan Auten led the individual race from the first to 54th hole and take medallist honors, totaling 218 over the Sunbrook Golf Course layout. She edged Nicole Keller (221) of Idaho by three strokes.
In the regular season finale, the Buffs lost an average of five strokes from their first to second round scores and had fallen to seventh before the turnaround.
But the third round belonged to Erin Kerr. Kerr had fallen to 23rd following her second round 82, but managed to shave 11 strokes off her final round to card a 71, the third lowest score of the final round, and improve to 15th in the final leader board.
Allison Rella was 23rd after today's second round 78, then carded a 79 in the final for a 54-hole total 231 and a share of 24th, making the fourth time this season CU's two top finishers were among the top-25. Joey Stetser improved from a second round 82 and 45th place to a third round 77 to finish 39th for the second straight tournament.
Maria Persson Gulda carded a second-round 79 (the sixth lowest score of the two-day round), and would go on to turn in a final round 80 to finish 46th to round out CU's scorecard. Jolene Fellhauer (81-76-237) improved from 57th after the second round to finish in a tie for 46th. Robin Worthington shot a career high 100 in the second round and improved a team-best 13 strokes on the final turn for a total 271.
With the regular season in the books, the Big 12 tournament christens the postseason schedule, April 21-23 in Columbia, Mo. The Buffs finished 11th a year ago in Manhattan, Kan.
