ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. ? The University of Colorado men's golf team rebounded a bit here Saturday in its first tournament of the 2003-04 season, as the Buffs finished 14th in the 48th Annual William H. Tucker Intercollegiate.
No. 8 Arizona State held off a late charge from host and No. 20 New Mexico, as the Sun Devils shot a 9-over 297 in the final round to finish with a 1-over 865 score, topping the Lobos by two shots. New Mexico recorded Saturday's second best round (1-over 289), as only BYU bettered the Lobos, using a 3-under 286 to nab third with an 875 total. Colorado finished 35-over par at 899, good for 14th place and nine strokes out of a top 10 finish. The Buffs fared better in the final round, tying for the ninth best score on the day (298), and were within five strokes of five other teams in 19-team field, which included five top 20 teams and seven others in the top 50, including the No. 38 Buffs.
Senior Kane Webber and sophomore Edward McGlasson paced the Buffaloes in their first meet of the season. Webber showed no signs of rust after redshirting in 2002-03, scoring an even-par 72 in the final round for a 219 total to tie for 17th place. It was one of only 17 rounds of par or better out of 103 Saturday, as only eight players broke par in the blustery conditions. McGlasson shot a 1-over 73 to finish with a 220 score, tying for 23rd place.
New Mexico's Ian Medlock, who played as an extra for the Lobos, won the tournament by two strokes after posting a 72-69-70?211 scorecard on the 7,354-yard, par-72 University of New Mexico Championship Golf Course layout.
'The winds really picked up and that made the conditions a lot tougher for the final round,' CU head coach Mark Simpson said. 'Kane played better than what his score (a par 72) indicated, and Edward got off to a nice start. When we get our three-to-five guys going, we'll have a solid team. This effort here is not indicative of the kind of team we had, although in the last round, we pretty much held our own.'
The Buffaloes won't return to action for over three weeks, traveling next to Malibu, Calif., to participate in the Pepperdine Club Glove Intercollegiate.
