W-GOLF SECOND AT BRONCO FALL INVITE

October 12, 2004 | Women's Golf

KUNA, Idaho ? Maria Persson Gulda shot a season best 2-under second round 70 and her 54-hole 218 is a career low as the junior matched her career best finish, fifth, while the University of Colorado women's golf team fired the second round's low score (a season low 293), the second ?lowest team round of the Bronco Fall Invitational, for a three-round 903 to improve from fourth to finish second here Tuesday, the Buffs' second runner-up finish of the fall.

Nationally ranked Southern Methodist combined for a 291-296-295-882 to edge both Colorado (304-293-306-903) and Colorado State (301-305-297-903).  Five strokes separated the second through fifth place teams as both Centennial State programs were just two strokes ahead of Fresno State (905) and host Boise State (907).  SMU's Jennifer Ackerson fired a 7-under 211 for medalist honors, ahead of Fresno State's Laura Luethke (213), Sarah Tiller (216) of Portland State, Weber State's Katie Higham (218) and Gulda.

“Finally,” said head coach Anne Kelly on a solid three-round effort.  “We were really happy with our second round and a little disappointed with the third.  But it's better than last year.”

Gulda's finish is her highest since a fifth place finish at the Lady Aztec Invitational last October in Chula Vista, Calif.  Sophomore Hannah Hoch shot par on Tuesday's second round before going 3-over on the last loop of the Falcon Crest Golf Course to finish ninth, her third top-10 finish of the season, with a 74-72-75-221.

Allison Rella's 75-76-78-229 is the senior's second best three-round total for a 25th place finish while Lindsay Senger scored in both rounds Tuesday, carding a career low 75 on the second loop and a third round 80.  Her 235 ties a three-round career low for the redshirt freshman.  Jessie Malcolm tied a career low round of her own with a second round 78 before a final round 81 to finish in a share of 53rd.

The Buffs will take a 14-day break from competition before teeing off a traditionally strong field in the Rainbow Wahine Invitational in Honolulu, Oct. 26-27.
