W-GOLF SLIPS TO EIGHTH AT KENT YOUEL

October 27, 2004 | Women's Golf

Oahu, Hawai'i ?  The University of Colorado women's golf team put the 2004 fall season in the books, their strongest fall in program history, with a third and final round 309 here at the Kent Youel Invitational.  Paced by Allison Rella's final loop team low 74, the total 912 saw the Buffs slip from sixth after Tuesday's second round to finish eighth.

Despite a disappointing final team round, the Buffs finished 23 strokes ahead of last year's score in this tournament, and improved four places.

“We're disappointed with today's finish, but overall we really improved this fall,” said head coach Anne Kelly.  “We now know what we need to work on in the off season, which is different things for different people, though across the board we need to work on our putting.

“This fall also gave a lot of people the chance to play in some tournaments, and can now see how our players handled different competition.”

With players finishing first, second and third, UCLA shot 5-under 283-285-291-859 for a commanding 19-stroke lead over PAC 10 rival Arizona State (878). Defending champion Oklahoma finished third (893).  The Bruins' Amie Cochran (70-70-72-212) took medalist honors with a 4-under tournament, ahead of teammates Susie Mathews (213) and Charlotte Mayorkas (215).

Rella made the turn just 1-over with a birdie on 14 and just a pair of bogeys on 10 and 15, and shot par on all but two holes on her back nine, closing the final fall season of her collegiate career with five straight pars.  Her final round 74 was the second lowest of her fall and improved her two-day total to 222 to finish 12th.

“This tournament made me realize how many personal goals I've accomplished and how good this is going to be,” said Rella.  “I really grinded on the third round.  I didn't hit the ball as well as I did yesterday, but every shot I took I stayed patient and just got one shot closer to that final hole and reflected back to just how lucky I am.”

Hannah Hoch also made the turn 2-over and after bogeys on 10 and 12 came in with six straight pars to go 5-over on the day, a slip from going 3-under on Tuesday's first round, but enough for her to finish seventh, her fourth top-10 finish of the fall.

Maria Persson-Gulda went without a birdie Wednesday and matched her first round score with a final loop 77 and finished 35th.  Jessica Ellis birdied the par 5 seventh hole, but couldn't overcome a round plagued with three doubles and fired a final round 82, a pair of strokes better than her second to finish her second tournament with a 244 and a 64th place finish as CU's final count toward the team score.

Charlotte Persson-Gulda continued to struggle with her driver on the tee box and putts on her short game, turning in a final round 86.  Her three-round 260 put her in 78th place.
